Finance & Strategy Senior Analyst - Strategic Initiatives

  • Full-time

Company Description

Block is one company built from many blocks, all united by the same purpose of economic empowerment. The blocks that form our foundational teams — People, Finance, Counsel, Hardware, Information Security, Platform Infrastructure Engineering, and more — provide support and guidance at the corporate level. They work across business groups and around the globe, spanning time zones and disciplines to develop inclusive People policies, forecast finances, give legal counsel, safeguard systems, nurture new initiatives, and more. Every challenge creates possibilities, and we need different perspectives to see them all. Bring yours to Block.

Job Description

We are looking for a new Senior Analyst to join our team to drive highly impactful, complex, and visible projects across the organization. In particular, the Senior Analyst will focus on operational efficiency and organizational development – ensuring that Block can remain a best-in-class organization and that it is set up for success to achieve its lofty goals for the future. The Senior Analyst will partner with senior leads on our Guidance (Finance), Counsel, People, and Infrastructure teams (collectively, “Foundational Teams”) as well as our Business Units (Square, Cash App, TIDAL, TBD, and Bitcoin Hardware).

The Strategic Initiatives function on the Finance & Strategy (F&S) team was formed in 2021 to focus on three things:

  • Lead strategy for "Emerging Businesses" for Block. Be the voice of where the market is going and where there is an opportunity for Block to take part, and help educate relevant partners, leading towards a plan for if & how Block will get involved (build, buy, partner). Over the past year, we have helped stand up 4 new initiatives (TBD, Bitcoin Wallet, Bitcoin Mining, and Lightning payment infrastructure) and we work with those teams to help define their strategies and make important decisions on product, partnerships, go-to-market, operations, and more.
  • Build the operating muscle for Block to succeed as it scales user growth and adds more business lines. Help us define how we want the company to operate at a corporate level and ensure that we find the balance between enabling our BUs / ("Blocks") to operate independently and creatively while maintaining a strong corporate culture. Lead efforts to enable operational efficiencies to support rapid scaling.
  • Serve as the Finance & Strategy voice on cross-Block initiatives including (but not limited to) corporate development (M&A, partnerships, investments), Treasury, Tax, Capital Markets, Counsel and People businesses

You Will:

  • Drive, in collaboration with the Strategic Initiatives Director and/or Senior Manager, special projects across our Foundational teams to improve the way we operate. Specifically, your role will be to:
    • Help scope projects and ensure alignment on deliverables and timelines
    • Gather and analyze relevant data
    • Manage activities of peers within the project teams
    • Synthesize insights and present to senior stakeholders
  • In collaboration with the rest of the Strategic Initiatives team, help senior leadership understand how we should measure our operational performance, and help implement that recommendation
  • Proactively identify opportunities for Block to improve the functioning of its organization and get alignment from relevant stakeholders
  • Assist on ad-hoc special projects within the Guidance organization or Finance & Strategy team

Qualifications

  • 2-3+ years in a management consulting setting
  • 1-2+ years in strategy, business operations, corporate finance, or private equity
  • Excellent proficiency in financial modeling and Excel (can perform complex functions - you should be prepared for a case study)
  • An ability to execute independently and work with team members of all levels
  • Consistent track record of success and career progression
  • Basic understanding of the financial services industry and a commitment to Block's mission

Even better:

  • Experience with consumer finance, payments, small business finance, or consumer SaaS companies
