Electrical Design Engineer

  • Full-time

Company Description

Since we first opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely – and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take a payment and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together. So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, run a busy kitchen, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. And across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow all in one place.

Today, we’re a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex commerce operations, sellers just starting out, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers scale, so do our solutions. We all grow together.

There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a business that is big, meaningful, and lasting. And we are helping sellers around the world do the same.

Job Description

Our hardware team builds the tangible connection to all that is Square. From seller-serving products like Square Stand, Card Reader, Terminal, and Register; to an open-source Bitcoin wallet and more accessible Bitcoin mining ASIC. Our family of devices is growing - and this is only the beginning. As we introduce more and more of our products to the world, our hardware footprint continues to expand.

Square’s mission demands increasingly aggressive electrical designs that include integration of multiple technologies, RF, near-field communication (NFC), batteries, displays, multiple CPUs, and more. All of this must coexist with security, reliability, and low cost at high-volume manufacturing.

Square is a global company with offices around the world, and our hardware team is no exception. We have team members in various locations in East Asia, North America, Europe, and more. Our team based in Shenzhen includes mechanical and manufacturing test disciplines, along with quality, program management, and supply management. The Shenzhen team works most closely with our Asia-based manufacturing, engineering, and component partners.

  • Supporting prototype and production builds, including FA and manufacturing oversight

  • Recommending and leading sustaining improvements

  • Overseeing CM/JDM-owned design validation

  • Identifying gaps in CM partner engineering and providing guidance/training

  • Communicating problems or roadblocks to the broader team

Qualifications

You Have:

  • MS/BS degree in Electrical Engineering or Telecommunications Engineering

  • 3+ years experience as an electrical engineer in embedded systems

  • Strong communication & organization skills

  • Strong technical background in PCB and FPC DFM/Fab/Assembly/Test/FA

  • Strong working knowledge of SMT processes (IQC, SPI, AOI, Reflow, FAI, etc.)

  • Expertise in the hardware lab with test, measurement, and prototyping

  • Ability to prioritize and triage in a highly demanding environment

  • Extensive on-site factory experience with contract manufacturers

Even better if you have experience in:

  • Both high (>1M/yr) and low (<10k/yr) volume products

  • JDM/ODM product development model

  • Regulatory testing - including EMC, safety, etc.
