Job Description

We are looking for a Regulatory Counsel to join TBD, Square's newest business unit. You have experience managing complex and technical regulatory matters, seeing around corners to spot challenges and opportunity, working cross-functionally to get exceptional outcomes, and advocating on behalf of issues at the regulatory intersection of financial services and technology such as decentralized finance (DeFi), cryptocurrencies, payments, remittances, as well as new and transformative financial products.

You are comfortable with ambiguity, and have deep experience with regulators in the financial services space. You are a regulatory counsel who has an active interest in blockchain and decentralized technologies, and is passionate about building a new financial system that can bring the benefits of crypto technologies to mainstream audiences.

You will report directly to the General Counsel of TBD.

You will: 

  • Advise on multiple regulatory matters affecting TBD's initiatives both inside and outside of the U.S.

  • Keep the business up to speed on how to offer remarkable product solutions to our customers that meet regulatory requirements

  • Identify, summarize, and analyze the impact of new and proposed applicable rules and regulations

  • Represent TBD with external audiences (policymakers, regulators, third party groups, etc) on complex regulatory matters

  • Oversee the licensing application and management function for all applicable jurisdictions

  • Identify risk areas and develop systems, policies, and procedures to manage and mitigate them

  • Partner with TBD business colleagues to better understand their development priorities and regulatory needs

  • Quickly scale the learning curve on new subject areas across domains and technologies, including blockchain, crypto technologies, and decentralized identity infrastructure

Qualifications

You have:

  • 10+ years experience at a law firm, financial services, payments, fintech and/or technology desirable

  • Experience with FinTech, crypto, payment and banking issues

  • Experience handling regulatory and enforcement matters and prior relationships with relevant regulators at the SEC, CFTC, FinCEN and other relevant state and federal agencies

  • JD and an active membership in a bar

  • Fluency in translating regulatory requirements and legal advice into actionable guidance for business and product teams

  • Technical savvy: particularly important to have experience working directly with senior engineers and engineering management. High degree of comfort and fluency with computers and technology, and understanding of how technology is applied to business and regulatory problems

  • Entrepreneurial spirit: You're a self-starter with flexible skills

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Zone A: USD $296,600 - USD $362,500
Zone B: USD $296,600 - USD $362,500
Zone C: USD $296,600 - USD $362,500
Zone D: USD $296,600 - USD $362,500

This role is also eligible to participate in Block's equity plan subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies, and may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Sales roles may be eligible to participate in a commission plan subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies.
