Job Description

Block has an exciting career opportunity for a Head of Global Procurement that will be responsible for driving the procurement vision and strategy, working cross functionally to enable procurement from initial request though final delivery, contract negotiation, and execution, as well as ongoing vendor performance management. The procurement lead will be responsible for key sourcing categories that have a current annual spend of over $2B across Block’s global operations. The position will manage strategic and tactical sourcing, the buyer function, procurement operations and third party risk management.

This role is an opportunity for a highly motivated individual with a demonstrated background in procurement and supplier management capable of both hands-on individual contribution and strong leadership in a dynamic fast paced environment. The individual must demonstrate highly effective collaboration internally and externally, have a passionate focus on success, commitment to continuous improvement and a relentless drive to win. The role will proactively develop, maintain and execute plans for our supplier portfolio and in collaboration with our business partners be primarily responsible for managing the ‘cradle to grave’ vendor management lifecycle. Key responsibilities will include partnering with business partners to select third party service providers, vendor due diligence, support business acquisitions, conduct risk assessments and support compliance audits, successfully negotiate business contracts and SLAs, leverage vendor relationships, report exceptions, conduct QBRs with strategic vendors and oversee ongoing vendor monitoring. The successful candidate must have strong analytical and communication skills and a proven ability to build relationships with senior level stakeholders across the organization to ensure overall alignment of objectives and priorities. The position will report to the Chief Accounting Officer.

 

The primary responsibilities include:

  • Continue to build and scale a world-class global procurement team to support Block’s growth

  • Oversight of the daily operations of the Global Procurement functions (Strategic Sourcing, Buyers, Procurement Operations, TPRM) and serve as a hands-on leader that understands and performs the daily tactical and strategic functions as necessary

  • Driving continuous improvement in source to pay processes and development of requisite process improvement activities in sourcing and vendor management expertise across the Company

  • Lead the procurement team in designing and delivering the team’s strategic global vision on sourcing, negotiating, and supplier partnerships

  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders including compliance, finance, accounting, finance business systems and internal business partners to identify, understand and fulfill their requirements

  • Continually exploring new technologies in partnership with Business Technology to optimize performance, efficiency, and transparency to stakeholders 

  • Partner across the business units to develop and execute strategies for spend categories

  • Proactively collaborating with business partners and stakeholders to lead contract negotiation with suppliers; develop negotiation approaches, fallback positions and acceptable terms and conditions through contract completion and identify key benchmarks to measure contractual arrangements

  • Educate stakeholders on the sourcing processes and how procurement can add value

  • Lead and set strategy for supplier contract negotiations and supplier rationalization plan to optimize existing vendors to deliver cost reduction, supply assurance, quality improvement, innovation and increased vendor utility

  • Review existing contracts and understand business requirements; formulate guidelines and design standard vendor contract protocols

  • Identifying risks associated with key vendors and manage and monitor supplier performance against negotiated SLA and MSA terms

  • Refinement of procurement policy to establish a preferred vendor list that addresses financial viability, compliance with company policies and procedures, industry regulations and business continuity plans

  • Establishing vendor life-cycle strategy to oversee planning, sourcing and selection of new vendors, manage data for vendor performance and manage vendor off-boarding and transition

  • Requesting and/or assisting in the development of corrective action plans to address non-compliance by key vendors

  • Streamline procurement and sourcing processes and procedures, driving controls, visibility and efficiency

  • Development of financial analytics to support commercial term negotiations with performance dashboards and ROI based evaluation tools

  • Establish, measure, and report on team OKRs, KPIs and global procurement strategy

  • Creation and presentation of financial analysis to include total costs, business case development, cost modeling, cash flow analysis and impact to annual operating plans 

  • Identification and realization of cost-saving and cost-reduction opportunities and build a culture of long-term savings on procurement costs without compromising supply assurance or quality

  • Creation and maintenance of the appropriate workplace culture to demonstrate effective people leadership, setting clear performance standards, delivering feedback and coaching team members

  • Direct and oversee sourcing and procurement professionals, including training, mentoring and ensuring professional development

  • Maintenance of a global procurement training program for both internal customers and vendors

  • Supporting internal and external audit, SOX compliance and due diligence requests as necessary

  • Supporting other ad hoc projects as needed, such as procurement integration due to M&A

  • Creation, maintenance and development of relationships within the vendor community

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of strategic sourcing, procurement or vendor management experience; in a high growth technology environment preferred

  • 5+ years in head-of-function leadership capacity with the proven ability to hire, develop and mentor staff members

  • Must be comfortable building an organization and department in its entirety 

  • Strong management skills, including communicating, directing, planning, organizing and problem solving

  • Exceptional negotiating skills, along with a strong presence and ability to influence others, including senior leadership

  • Strong communication and project management to demonstrate project status, key actions, risks and opportunities

  • Self-directed, able to work independently, as well as work in a team-orientated and dynamic environment

  • Nimble with ability to take decisive action to address business needs that meet corporate business objectives

  • Superior interpersonal and presentation skills with proven track record of success in prior roles

  • Demonstrated quantitative and analytical skills to problem solving with a focus on managing within a team environment with strong attention to detail and sense of urgency

  • Proactively work to resolve performance issues with assigned suppliers to ensure effective and timely resolution

  • Ability to successfully leverage technology and financial systems to extract and analyze data

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited top tier university preferably in Procurement, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Commerce, Economics or related field. MBA/advanced technical degree preferred

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
