Job Description

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Risk & DS, Feature Platform team, you will be responsible for developing software to make an immediate impact on the Afterpay product and help lead major projects in the future. You will join the team to build Afterpay's in-house feature store platform to enable machine learning which includes highly scalable feature computation and serving for model development and real-time business use cases, such as underwriting, fraud detection or personalization/marketing. This is an exciting opportunity to make a direct and tangible impact on our product and work on projects that are pivotal to our team’s success and the company’s growth.

  • Be responsible for designing, building, and owning the services and infrastructure that manage Afterpay’s financial risk. You will build web applications, design highly available services, and work with complex distributed systems .
  • Take on leadership responsibilities of major projects and help mentor junior/mid-level engineers.
  • Collaborate with product managers, data scientists and other business stakeholders on planning and implementing frictionless user experiences.
  • Own features and functions throughout their lifecycle from inception, rollout, launch, scale, and iteration.
  • Work in cross-functional Product teams and stakeholders responsible for the discovery, delivery and validation of product features via microservices, APIs, and web-apps.
  • Work with the software engineering team following our software development principles, guided by the Tech Lead and Engineering Manager. It will also be expected that you help drive and perfect these principles.

Qualifications

  • Ideally experience on architecting large scale distributed systems.
  • 6+ years of experience in building and maintaining applications that utilize a modern programming language (Java/Kotlin/Python preferred.)
  • Familiarity with popular technologies; for example, Spring boot, Hibernate, gRPC, Kafka, Redis, Cassandra and so on.
  • Enthusiastic about solving business problems with technology and can take ownership of an end-to-end solution.
  • Passionate about continuously learning new technologies, frameworks, and services.
  • Possess an execution mindset and the ability to deliver with cross-functional teams that are globally distributed.
  • Exceptional written and verbal technical communication skills.
  • Any experience in building the Machine Learning Feature Store in the past would be beneficial but not essential.

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Zone A: USD $167,300 - USD $204,500
Zone B: USD $158,900 - USD $194,300
Zone C: USD $150,600 - USD $184,000
Zone D: USD $142,200 - USD $173,800

This role is also eligible to participate in Block's equity plan subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies, and may be eligible for a sign-on bonus.
