The blocks that form our foundational teams — People, Finance, Counsel, Hardware, Information Security, Platform Infrastructure Engineering, and more — provide support and guidance at the corporate level. They work across business groups and around the globe, spanning time zones and disciplines to develop inclusive People policies, forecast finances, give legal counsel, safeguard systems, nurture new initiatives, and more. Every challenge creates possibilities, and we need different perspectives to see them all. Bring yours to Block.

Job Description

Block’s Bitcoin Hardware team is building Bitcoin related hardware for the future of money. Our current initiatives include a self-custody bitcoin wallet to bring bitcoin ownership to the masses, and exploration of a bitcoin mining rig. As we introduce more products, we will meet the needs of more and more people globally. Our hardware engineers are responsible for designing and developing world class hardware products. They understand the subtleties of user interaction, robust communication interfaces, and smart product design.

Problems We Work On

The Manufacturing Test Engineers at Block are responsible for making sure that the millions of hardware devices leaving our factories are built according to design and meet (or exceed) customer expectations. We’re a diverse group of engineers that use our unique backgrounds to solve challenging problems in our factories. We dabble in electrical engineering, software, mechanicals and data analysis to understand the design intent of our products and understand how we can translate it to scalable test plans. We are Jacks and Jills of all trades, and we thrive on having a deep systems-level understanding of Block’s hardware products.

You will:

  • Become intimately familiar with Block's bitcoin hardware products and manufacturing processes.

  • Develop test plans and test-setup prototypes for new technologies.

  • Work with BTC HW’s Electrical Engineering group to understand electrical test points and ensure our products’ circuits are designed for testability.

  • Work with BTC HW’s embedded software group to understand embedded test access and APIs.

  • Write and debug test station software written in Python.

  • Understand the meaning of the measurements our test stations are taking, and feed analysis of these measurements back to our hardware design teams.

  • Work closely with contract manufacturers to set up and maintain test stations on the manufacturing line, debug test station problems, and optimize yield.

  • Reach beyond the boundaries of Manufacturing Test to make Block’s products better wherever you see the chance.

Qualifications

You are:

  • Experienced working in a technical field for 2-5 years.

  • Experienced in reading and understanding electronics circuit diagrams and schematics

  • Knowledgeable in circuit design at the “maker” level or beyond (e.g. projects like LED controllers, home automation, weather stations, etc.)

  • Excited to work on hands-on projects and to make things work in EE, software, and/or ME realms.

  • Conversant in Python, MATLAB, Labview, or similar programming language

  • Experienced with hardware lab equipment for test, measurement (e.g. oscilloscope, power supply, DMM, etc.), and/or prototyping (Raspberry Pi, Arduino, 3D printing, powertools, etc.)

  • Enthusiastic to apply methodical engineering problem-solving skills to dig into challenges that are outside of your expertise.

  • Collaborative: have the ability to work as a team, ask questions, and share information to solve problems.

  • Flexible: have the desire to help partner teams when boundaries may be ambiguous

  • Able to effectively communicate technical information to audiences that include members of various levels of technical expertise.

  • Able and willing to travel 10-20% as needed.

Preferred:

  • Experience with electronics schematic design and layout

  • Familiar with electronics manufacturing processes: SMT, FATP

  • Knowledgeable in statistics. Experience using SQL, JMP, or similar data program

  • Experienced performing analog measurements (RF, acoustic, optical, etc.) including calibration and control of systematic errors

  • Experience managing contract manufacturing test engineering partners to drive GR&R, DOE, and Factory Test Dry Runs to prepare for prototype NPI builds

  • Understanding of how to analyze GR&R data (both parametric and attribute/go no-go)

  • Experience writing clear reports (Build Reports, Station Issue Lists/Material Issue Lists, SOPs)
