Organizational Tech Lead, Orders

  • Full-time

Company Description

Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Job Description

The Orders team has a mission to allow sellers to reach their customers anywhere and provide a seamless experience to the customers (e.g. buy online, pickup in store) that today might only be available from much larger merchants.

This is a massive undertaking with huge challenges. We have many sellers with many different needs, and to meet those needs, we work with many partner teams at Square in navigating dependencies and intertwined technical / product ambiguities. The team has been growing rapidly (targeting ~100 by EOY), bringing scalability challenges and leadership opportunities.

We are looking to bring in someone who can serve in a “CTO-like” capacity for the Orders organization to help us achieve our mission.

You will:

  • Report to the Head of Orders Engineering

  • Work with engineering/product/design leaders to build the organizational and architectural vision and strategy, communicate them to ensure alignment, and collaborate closely with the teams to bring it to fruition

  • Think on the time scale of years but act on the time scale of weeks and quarters

  • Maintain a high degree of situational awareness across teams and projects to identify the highest priorities and mitigate key risks

  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders and peers from other organizations in the company; represent the team at organizational-level stakeholder meetings

  • Grow technical leaders by setting a positive example, providing opportunities to others, and mentoring people for success

  • Scale the organizational knowledge by setting up rituals for sharing expertise

Qualifications

You have

  • Passion for Square's mission

  • Track record in leading complex projects across multiple teams to successful completion

  • Collaborated with cross-functional teams in defining product / technical strategy

  • Demonstrated the ability to effectively influence stakeholders and lead without authority

  • Upleveled teammates through advising, mentoring, and sponsorship

  • 10+ years of experience in building and releasing software

  • (Optional) Familiarity with point-of-sale or payment API platforms (e.g. Shopify, Stripe)
