Senior Data Science Manager - Experimentation
- Full-time
- Alternate Location: Seattle, United States
Company Description
It all started with an idea at Block in 2013. Initially built to take the pain out of peer-to-peer payments, Cash App has gone from a simple product with a single purpose to a dynamic app, bringing a better way to send, spend, invest, borrow and save to our millions of monthly active users. With a mission to redefine the world's relationship with money by making it more relatable, available and accessible, at Cash App you'll have the opportunity to make a real-world impact with your career.
Remote Work
Today, Cash App has thousands of employees around the world with a culture geared toward creativity, collaboration and impact. We’ve been a distributed team since day one, and continue to value working across time zones and continents both remotely and in our Cash App offices.
Our offices are great, but many of our roles can be done remotely from the countries where Block operates. We tailor our experience to champion our employees’ creativity and productivity wherever they are.
Job Description
We are looking for a Data Science Manager to lead our Experimentation, Optimization, and Growth Data Science team. This team is responsible for a very wide scope that includes developing our nascent experimentation infrastructure and best practices, optimization of existing user experiences within the app, and generally driving growth in specific key business metrics. Current projects range from very large re-structuring of the entire user experience to smaller optimizations of Cash Card onboarding. The team consists of a combination of Product, Design, Client and Server Eng leads, and is looking to bring into the fold their strategic, technically strong DS lead.
This organization breaks itself into independently running workstreams, each with their own PM, Eng teams, and primary DS partner. Each of these workstreams will look for us to hire and develop strong dedicated DS partners. You will be responsible for recruiting and developing this team of data scientists as we continue to scale.
This team is unique within Cash as it will be expected to actively partner and manage relationships across the breadth of the Cash product development organization. This presents a large opportunity for exposure and impact across the business on top of the large scale of the product changes this organization takes on.
Although this is a leadership role, while we start to build the team we need someone with enough technical depth to roll up their sleeves and partner with some of their workstreams on experimentation and product analytics. Please expect an interview process which assesses both leadership and technical DS skills.
You will:
- Lead the workstream - this will include hiring the first ICs into the team and scaling it up
- Partner with senior leaders from Engineering, Design and Product to set and drive a long-term vision for this team
- Partner with the experimentation engineering teams to design, develop, and utilize a new Cash App experimentation system. Demonstrate and evangelize best practices across the broader set of Cash product teams
- Partner with growth and optimization teams to standardize their framework for evaluating and testing optimization opportunities
- Identify opportunities to optimize across multiple metrics and constraints, leveraging in-depth analysis and rigorous experimental design
- Develop your team members ability to partner strategically (not just on execution!) with their workstream partners
- Offer technical mentorship to existing team members, focusing on their long-term growth
- Use data and expertise to build compelling narratives that communicate ideas and opportunities to gain buy in and build alignment, with both internal and external partners
Qualifications
To be successful, you should have:
- 8+ years of Data Science experience, with at least 2+ years of experience as a direct Manager of Data Scientists or Data Analysts
- Experience working in consumer facing products or Fintech is a plus, but not a requirement
- Enough (and recent) proficiency with Python, SQL and other relevant tools that will allow you to support and mentor the team and encourage their technical growth
- Strong communication and the demonstrated ability to translate insights into impact
- Excellent business acumen and a self starting, growth centric mindset
Technologies we use and/or teach:
- Querying and Pipelines: SQL (MySQL, Snowflake, BigQuery), Airflow, Prefect
- Data Manipulation and Analysis: Python (Pandas, NumPy and sklearn) or R
- Dashboarding: Mode, Tableau, Looker
