The Block Brand and Purpose team mixes creative, communications, and data to build the Block brand and communicate our purpose of economic empowerment. We're curious, quirky designers, writers, strategists, technologists, analysts, and economists who work on everything from big brand campaigns to deep data analysis.

We're looking for a creative software engineer to help bring the Block brand to life through creative interactive experiences. You are well versed in an appropriate mix of front-end development and prototyping tools, and have experience with animation and 3D rendering for the web. You create flexible code that can be iterated upon, and pride yourself on being up on the latest best practices. Thriving on exploration and experimentation, you are at the heart of co-creating ideas and bringing them to life. Your skills complement your application of technology, including (but never limited to): a precise eye for intelligent UX, great design, and a strategic foundation. Block is an art-forward brand and you will work with multiple teams to create experiences that promote our purpose, tell compelling narratives, and express our identity. No idea is too out there. You will report to the Creative Software Engineer Lead.

You Will:

• Participate in concept development iteration
• Develop prototypes coming out of ideation to create custom content experiences (e.g., infographics, interactive tools, and more) and quickly demonstrate what an idea looks and feels like in real life
• Work creatively through and around perceived limitations and challenges imposed by the delivery platform to create delightful experiences for customers
• Evaluate and document any creative or engineering standards or patterns that could arise from your work
• Participate in team strategy discussions and brainstorms

You Have:

• BS in Computer Science or a related technical field, or 4+ years of relevant work experience
• Front-end development experience — HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
• Experience with JavaScript frameworks/libraries — React.js, Three.js, Next.js
• A portfolio of work that displays responsive web examples, iconography, typography, color, imagery, and motion
• An understanding of web standards, browser performance, and basic UX/UI principles
• A history of collaboration with other non-technical teams
• Skills to work on complex problems to any audience in verbal, visual, or written formats
• Experience with 3D rendering software, Blender or Cinema 4D.
• Experience with motion graphics and 3D animation

Even better:

• Backend development experience — familiarity with Ruby, Java, or similar
• Familiarity with AR/VR
• Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and Figma
• Experience with data visualization
• Experience with WebGL and GLSL
• Familiarity with Svelte
• Familiarity with CMS tools such as Contentful
