Since we first opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely – and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take a payment and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together. So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, run a busy kitchen, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. And across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow all in one place.

Today, we’re a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex commerce operations, sellers just starting out, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers scale, so do our solutions. We all grow together.

Square Bill Pay is a new standalone product initiative to help small businesses organize and streamline payments to their vendors and suppliers. To run their operations, small businesses pay many bills/invoices and expenses, a.k.a. accounts payable (AP). These bills and invoices are usually paper-based and require payments in a variety of methods (e.g. check / ACH), making the bill pay process tedious and time consuming. Similar to how Square has made the “getting paid” job easier for small businesses, we have a great opportunity to build an equally remarkable solution for the “paying others” job. In two years, we aspire to have launched and grown Square Bill Pay into a leading accounts payable solution. Bill Pay will integrate deeply with the Square ecosystem, especially our emerging banking products, to save sellers time and money with paying bills, and help them manage their cash flow better.

Our team is newly formed and this is an opportunity to tackle a greenfield product from ideation to launch. You will be responsible for owning major architectural decisions, implementing critical functionality, and helping drive our product vision. The ideal candidate is a product-minded, back-end engineer who can quickly take ideas from prototype to production with minimal guidance and supervision.

You will:

• Work closely with other engineers, designers, and product managers to design and build world-class product experiences.

• Be responsible for the entirety of your features; including API design, implementation, automated testing, and rollout.

• Own and drive the architecture of our backend systems.

• Hold yourself, and your teammates accountable to the standards of engineering and ethics that enables Square to safely move billions of dollars in payments and allow our customers to trust us with their sensitive data.

• Help empower a team of engineers by mentoring individuals, cultivating pragmatic engineering decision-making, and leveraging your technical expertise to constantly raise the quality of design decisions and implementation by holding the team to a high standard.

You have:

• 4+ years professional experience in software engineering.

• Strong execution skills, with a pragmatic focus on ROI, to deliver remarkable solutions to our merchants.

• The ability to adapt to the different stages of product development. This can mean building intentionally scrappy code to iterate quickly, or building a sustainable system that will support our product for years to come.

• An appreciation for the connection between the software you build and the experience it delivers to customers.

• Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with other functions, such as designers, product managers, data scientists, marketing, and business development to deliver a great product.

• Demonstrated, first hand experience building products at scale.

• Proficiency in at least one server-side language and an enthusiasm to learn others. Our engineers have all kinds of backgrounds and are encouraged to move freely across our technology stack.

• The ability to provide technical mentorship and guidance to engineers of varying experience levels.
