Principal Software Engineer - API Frameworks

  • Full-time

Company Description

Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a smartphone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Terminal, Square Appointments, Square Online Store, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Job Description

The API Frameworks team creates tools that empower our internal developers to rapidly release new internal and public APIs and features. We are a small, focused, and growing team with an abundance of growth and impact opportunities.

As a lead software engineer on the API Frameworks team, you will lead the design, creation, and maintenance of centralized, highly scalable, and performant libraries and services leveraged by every Square internal and public API. You'll care about performance, down to the millisecond, and know how to not only implement, but maintain these systems. Every call from an external developer who integrates with Square will directly use the code you've helped develop.

You will mentor those around you and contribute to their success while also ensuring project success through review and comments on all product and engineering designs authored by the API Frameworks team. You will have the opportunity to participate in the community of internal developers who enable the Square Developer Platform and use that knowledge to create new offerings as well as adapt existing ones to meet the needs of our developers. Lastly, you'll have fun working on new complex problems with engineers who are passionate about what they do.

You Will:

  • Build highly performance systems that live between our external API users and internal API builders and are capable of handling hundreds of millions of requests per day
  • Work cross-functionally with our product teams, *many* other engineering teams, and partner developers to design and implement Squares global developer platform.
  • Build systems that maintain customers' sensitive data and hold Square to the highest standards for security and compliance.
  • Design fault tolerant systems so the team can be brave, move fast, and break things, without ever showing a negative impact to customers.

Qualifications

  • Experience building and maintaining highly scalable and performant systems
  • BA/BS degree or equivalent practical, working experience (8+ years )
  • A sense of customer empathy and desire to influence the product direction
  • Desire to oversee all aspects of building Square's developer platform in a small, agile, and very rapidly growing team.
  • Understanding and curiosity in creating well thought out, scalable, low-latency, global systems.
  • Been self-driven, open to collaboration, and able to communicate effectively with all levels of engineers and management
  • Proven experience mentoring fellow developers of varying levels of experience.
  • C++, Java, Go, and Ruby
  • Envoy
  • Designing and managing high volume, fault tolerant services
  • Working collaboratively or contributing to open source projects
