Data Analyst, Seller Communications

  • Full-time

Company Description

Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Job Description

Our Seller Communications team is made up of tough, entrepreneurial, and curious people. We communicate to the world Square's mission to empower businesses with an ecosystem of integrated solutions, including elegant hardware, robust business software, and accessible financial services, that give them an advantage where they previously and unfairly had none. As part of the Seller Communications team, you will play a key role in helping the Square story come to life. We are looking for someone who loves to tell stories through data and gets a thrill out of diving into a haystack of information to find that perfect metric. You will bring a data-driven perspective and discipline to our team of PR professionals, and provide quantitative support to uncover newsworthy insights that showcase our sellers, our business, and larger consumer trends.

You Will:
  • Turn data into meaningful narratives for external partners such as journalists, business owners, academics, and policymakers
  • Collaborate with our communications, marketing, social, content and government relations teams to help identify trends and insights that highlight Square's sellers and products
  • Perform data analysis using SQL to create reports and analyses
  • Use your technical experience with analytics tools and scientific rigor to produce newsworthy insights
  • Explore our vast payments and transaction data sets to identify trends, including seller usage patterns, payment volume, item-level data, growth metrics, and seasonal fluctuations
  • Challenge assumptions, and be comfortable working with big and sometimes complicated data to glean interesting, digestible findings

Qualifications

You Have:
  • 3+ years of analytics experience in a payment, product, marketing, communications, or business role.
  • A command of data-driven storytelling, including how to spot spurious patterns, prevent correlation vs causation issues, and data cherry picking
  • Advanced proficiency with database querying technologies (we use Snowflake and BigQuery)
  • Understanding of quantitative research and statistical analysis with experience using data to support a point of view
  • Experience driving analytics projects from beginning to end: question formation, data exploration, statistical analysis, visualization, and presentation
  • The skills to communicate complex analysis to any audience in verbal, visual, and written formats
  • A track record of working in collaboration with multiple disciplines as an analytics partner
  • You instinctively and consistently create personal and professional stretch goals and meet them
  • Curiosity, creative thinking, and a sense of humor.
  • Passion for journalism, media, communications, or storytelling
  • Proficiency with Excel, SQL and data visualization tools like Looker or Tableau
Technologies we teach and use:
  • Query language and databases (Snowflake, BigQuery)
  • Python, R
  • Visualization (Tableau, Looker)
