Company Description

We believe the economy is better when everyone has access. When everyone has room to grow. No one should be left out because the cost is too great or the technology too complex. We started with a little white credit card reader but haven’t stopped there. We’re empowering the independent electrician to send invoices, setting up the favorite food truck with a delivery option, helping the ice cream shop pay its employees, and giving the burgeoning coffee chain capital for a second, third, and fourth location. We’re here to help sellers of all sizes start, run, and grow their business—and helping them grow their business is good business for everyone.

Job Description

As a Manufacturing Test Engineer, you will be responsible for designing test processes that are as elegant as our products. You are able to drive reliable product designs and processes through every phase of the product lifecycle. You can build test stations to ensure every customer has a perfect experience with our hardware, and use the data generated by those stations to drive improvement in Square's products.

You will:

  • Become intimately familiar with Square's hardware products and manufacturing processes in order to set test strategies for the entire supply chain.

  • Serve as the technical liaison between the hardware design teams and the factory.

  • Work with Square’s Devices Software Engineering  group to specify embedded test access and APIs.

  • Collaborate with Electrical Engineering to understand their design intent, then translate this to DFt suggestions and a detailed electrical test plan.

  • Understand mechanical assembly process in order to recommend focused verification of high-risk or high-consequence assembly steps.

  • Design and fabricate mechanical test fixtures.

  • Design and validate PCBs for electrical signal routing and signal conditioning within your test fixtures.

  • Write and debug station software.

  • Understand the meaning of the measurements your stations are taking, and feed analysis of these measurements back to our hardware design teams.

  • Provide on-site support during NPI and mass-production builds in Asia and Mexico.  (~25% max travel.)

  • Look for opportunities to make the test team (and the entire hardware team) more nimble.

  • Identify strategic partnerships that can extend our team’s capabilities without compromising our quality standards.

  • Architect test stations using generic building blocks that can be re-used in future test stations.

  • Create automated systems to quickly collect feedback about our products’ performance in the factory and with our customers

  • Reach beyond the boundaries of Manufacturing Test to make Square’s products better wherever you see the chance.

Qualifications

You have:

  • Flexibility to thrive in a constantly-changing startup environment.

  • Hands-on aptitude to make things work in EE, software, and/or ME realms:

  • Ability to read EE schematics.

  • Understanding of software design principles and can pragmatically apply those to factory test scripts.

  • Natural inclination to apply methodical engineering problem-solving skills to dig into challenges that are outside of your expertise.

  • Collaboration: ability to navigate Square’s fluid organization to get things done.

Even Better::

  • 5+ years' experience producing complex electronic products in high volume.  Bonus points for consumer electronics.

  • Practical experience performing sensitive analog measurements in a high-volume factory environment.   (RF, acoustic, optical, etc.)

  • Confirmed ability to write robust, extensible software in a variety of languages on a variety of platforms.   (We work mostly in Python and C++ on Windows, Mac and linux.)

  • Real-world understanding of statistics/SPC.

  • Basic understanding of electrical signal integrity, especially as it applies to passing signals around in a noisy factory environment.

  • Working knowledge of functional test and ATE techniques (ICT, BSCAN, AOI, X-ray) for board-level assemblies (PCBAs).
