Software Engineering Manager, Device Software Tools and Services

  • Full-time

Company Description

We believe the economy is better when everyone has access. When everyone has room to grow. No one should be left out because the cost is too great or the technology too complex. We started with a little white credit card reader but haven’t stopped there. We’re empowering the independent electrician to send invoices, setting up the favorite food truck with a delivery option, helping the ice cream shop pay its employees, and giving the burgeoning coffee chain capital for a second, third, and fourth location. We’re here to help sellers of all sizes start, run, and grow their business—and helping them grow their business is good business for everyone.

Job Description

Square’s hardware devices run the full gamut of embedded software: we make our own ASICs, write C for ARM cores, customize our own Android platform, and work with our mobile developers to integrate Square’s Android apps into our hardware. The Device Software Tools and Services team builds the systems that make it easier to put this software directly into our merchant’s hands. We work across multiple tech stacks and through the entire software delivery cycle.

We’re looking for an experienced engineering manager who can help us expand and accomplish our vision for a modern embedded software development process.

You will:

  • Dive deep into our device software development process and create your own vision for tools we can build to improve this process.

  • Cultivate connections across the Device Software and Hardware team to stay aligned and focused on the most important work.

  • Participate in essential technical, design, and product discussions with leaders across the organization.

  • Build an outstanding team by coaching engineers, fostering engineering decision-making, and applying your technical expertise to hold your team to high engineering standards

Qualifications

You have:

  • Directly managed engineers for at least 2 years (including feedback, performance, hiring, career guidance).

  • A track-record of delivering value through your team.

  • A background in software engineering and the ability to provide technical mentorship and guidance to your team.

  • A relevant BA/BS degree or equivalent industry experience (5+ years preferred).

Even better if you have (but still get in touch if you haven’t):

  • Built a team or function from the ground up.

  • Been successful in multiple company environments, large and small.

  • Acted as a product owner (either explicitly or implicitly) for a software engineering team.

  • Worked or tinkered with hardware and embedded software.
