Company Description

We believe the economy is better when everyone has access. When everyone has room to grow. No one should be left out because the cost is too great or the technology too complex. We started with a little white credit card reader but haven’t stopped there. We’re empowering the independent electrician to send invoices, setting up the favorite food truck with a delivery option, helping the ice cream shop pay its employees, and giving the burgeoning coffee chain capital for a second, third, and fourth location. We’re here to help sellers of all sizes start, run, and grow their business—and helping them grow their business is good business for everyone.

Job Description

The Catalog team manages the items and inventory that Square merchants sell to their customers. We support all types of merchants from food trucks with just a few menu items to retail stores with hundreds of thousands of SKUs for sale. Our team maintains the backend services and databases that store items, the web interface used to edit them, and the Android and iOS code used to ring up items at the time of sale.

As a mobile developer on the Catalog team, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining new features in Square’s Point-of-Sale application to help merchants manage their item library and inventory. You will be deeply involved in the technical details of building robust user experiences and the client libraries that support them.

You will:

  • Build items & inventory features in Square’s Android & iOS Point-of-Sale applications, used by hundreds of thousands of merchants to create and edit their item catalog.

  • Work closely with product and design teams to refine the features we build.

  • Collaborate with server and web developers to build full-scale features that include mobile and web components.

  • Work with machine learning experts to build ML-backed features.

  • Cross-compile business logic code using J2ObjC and integrate shared code into the Android & iOS applications.

You have:

  • Innate curiosity and a desire to be responsible for all aspects of helping track Square merchants' item and inventory data

  • Experience and/or interest in Android or iOS development

  • Track record of pursuing self-directed side projects, research, or open source projects

Technologies we use:

  • Java for most Android development, with a small but growing Kotlin codebase

  • Objective-C for most iOS development on our team, with a growing use of Swift at Square

  • J2ObjC for sharing business logic between Android & iOS platforms
