Hardware Test Engineer

  • Full-time

Company Description

We believe the economy is better when everyone has access. When everyone has room to grow. No one should be left out because the cost is too great or the technology too complex. We started with a little white credit card reader but haven’t stopped there. We’re empowering the independent electrician to send invoices, setting up the favorite food truck with a delivery option, helping the ice cream shop pay its employees, and giving the burgeoning coffee chain capital for a second, third, and fourth location. We’re here to help sellers of all sizes start, run, and grow their business—and helping them grow their business is good business for everyone.

Job Description

As a Manufacturing Test Engineer, you are our eyes, ears, and hands in the factory for ensuring that our hardware test processes are reliable, repeatable, and maintainable.  You are able to contribute to the design of test processes that are efficient and scalable to support every phase of the product life cycle. You can triage and debug test station issues (both electrical and software), and direct factory processes (GR&R, DOEs, Factory Dry Runs, Prototype Builds).  You are a keen observer with good instincts and can alert the rest of the team when things look out of order. You are self-motivated with a desire for continuous improvement, but are comfortable asking questions when necessary. You are excited about being part of a close-knit, diverse team of engineers.

You will:

  • Understand Square's hardware products and manufacturing processes in order to support test strategies for the entire supply chain.

  • Serve as a technical bridge between the Manufacturing Test Team in San Francisco and our JDM/CM Factory Partners in China

  • Understand the meaning of the measurements our stations are taking, and feed analysis of these measurements back to our hardware design teams.

  • Provide on-site support during NPI and mass-production builds in China

  • Provide clear and effective build reports for test stations (Readiness during dry-run, cycle times and retest rates during builds, failure mode summaries)

  • Write, debug and update test station software

  • Debug electrical signal routing and signal conditioning with test fixtures

  • Identify possible risks of cosmetic damage caused by test fixtures and recommend tests of high-risk mechanical assembly steps

  • Reach beyond the boundaries of Manufacturing Test to make Squares products better wherever you see the chance

  • Maintain and build relationships with in-region Test Equipment vendors and contractors

Qualifications

You have:

  • Clear written and spoken English and Mandarin communication skills

  • Flexibility to thrive when task assignments are not clear and/or incomplete.

  • Desire to continuously learn new things

  • 4 year degree in EE, Computer Engineering/Science or related field (or equivalent on the job experience)

  • 5 years work experience in Manufacturing Test Engineering for world-class products: either designing/building test stations or supporting factory test lines at contract manufacturers

  • Confirmed ability to write robust, extensible software in a variety of languages on a variety of platforms. (We work mostly in Python and C++ on Windows, Mac and linux.)

  • Hands-on aptitude to make things work in EE, software, and/or ME realms:

    • Read EE schematics.

    • Correctly operate and interpret typical EE test equipment (DMM, Oscilloscope, Signal Analyzer)

    • Understand software design principles and pragmatically apply those to writing, debugging and maintaining factory test scripts.

  • Ability to analyze and visualize numerical data (basic knowledge of statistics, fluent in Excel, JMP, or other numerical analysis tools)

  • Ability to manage contract manufacturing test engineering partners to drive GR&R, DOE, and Factory Test Dry Runs to prepare for prototype NPI builds

  • Understanding of how to analyze GR&R data (both parametric and attribute/go no-go)

  • Ability to create clear and effective reports (Build Reports, Station Issue Lists/Material Issue Lists, SOPs, etc.)
