Job Description
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Biomedical Scientist to join our Cellular Pathology laboratory based in Nottingham. You should be visionary and have a flair for pushing the boundaries of routine practice to innovate and develop a future proof first class service, meeting and exceeding KPI’s.
We are specifically looking for an experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist that has worked at band 6 or band 7 level in cellular pathology/Histopathology.
You must have the ability to work unsupervised and the confidence to liaise with Pathologists/Customers across the country.
This role will be jointly responsible for the day to day delivery of the technical work, working closely with the current Laboratory lead. The postholder will deputise for the Cell Path Service Manager when required.
Line management of Biomedical Scientists will be a part of this role and as such it is desirable for applicants to have some experience in leading teams and/or line management experience. The post will be mentored by the Service Managers to enable the successful applicant to grow into line management responsibilities.
Competencies in some areas of dissection is highly desirable.
You will have excellent technical ability and participate in all areas of the routine laboratory. This will include:
Summary:
To lead, assist and support in the provision of all laboratory activities to facilitate provision of a high-quality cellular pathology service.
Working within key performance indicators (KPI’s) to provide a quality and timely service for patients.
Performing dissection on A-E category specimens (following training) and cascade training to other staff (role appropriate).
Strong working relationships with all staff in and external to the laboratory, taking direction from Laboratory Service managers when necessary. Building excellent relationships with pathologists and customers to ensure a high-quality service and excellent customer relations.
You will maintain competency in all areas for the laboratory by participating in a rota.
Duties:
To participate in (following suitable training) areas of the laboratory services including:
· Histopathological processes (including sample booking in/receipt, cut up scribe, macro typing, embedding, microtomy, quality procedures, filing blocks and slides, digital pathology).
· Perform direct specimen transfer of A&B category specimens.
· Dissection of A-C category specimens.
· To become an expert dissector in at least 2 specimen specialities covering category D and E complexity.
· Working with the Service Managers ensure that dissection procedures (SOP) reflect RCPath guidelines and datasets.
· H&E QC.
· Perform special stains and QC.
· Perform Immunohistochemistry and QC.
· To ensure that control material is available for diagnostic tests within the repertoire and anticipate future needs.
· To facilitate timely QC of the same day process cases.
· Antibody lot testing and optimisation.
· DNA preparation processes.
· Troubleshoot equipment break-down.
· Digital pathology image QC.
· Validation/verification of reagents, protocols and equipment.
· HER2 fluorescent in-situ hybridisation (if required by RefLab)
- To assist in the general duties of all laboratory areas including:
- Receipt/testing/preparation of reagents.
- Completion of tasks on laboratory task lists.
- Calibration, monitoring and maintenance of equipment.
- Monitoring and maintenance of stock levels.
- Management of waste and general ‘house-keeping’ duties.
- Maintenance of a clean and tidy working environment.
- To carry out all work to specified standards directed by professional bodies including the Institute of Biomedical Scientists (IBMS), Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS)/ISO:15189 and MHRA Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
- To maintain HCPC membership.
- To be responsible for the daily work throughput and laboratory daily performance.
- As a part of the senior team you will explore new ways of working to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
- To be an area expert in at least one other area of the laboratory.
- To lead by example, demonstrating professionalism to all colleagues.
- HER2 FISH enumeration (following suitable training and if required by the service).
- Signing of reference laboratory reports.
- To collaboratively administer the UKNEQAS CPT scheme and provide support for UKNEQAS ICC/ISH scheme, raising and owning any non-conformances that arise from sub-standard scores for stains linked to the cell path service.
- Investigate poor/borderline EQA result.
- To assist the Laboratory service manager in the sourcing and trial of new equipment.
- To complete and keep up to date all training and competencies.
- Attend any training endeavours as appropriate to your role or as reasonably requested by your Line Manager.
- To train others when you have been signed off as able to train.
- To create and deliver training to support team CPD.
- To communicate any concerns/issues to your line manager, as and when they arise to enable effective management.
- Maintain and develop standard operating procedures and associated documents.
- Participate in change control, non-conformance investigation, process improvement, validation and verification, ensuring high quality processes are always maintained.
- To comply with all quality control procedures to support maintenance of the Source Bioscience Quality Management System.
- To respect the confidentiality of all matters that may be learned relating to service users, employment and other members of staff.
- To dress and act in a professional manner at all times.
- To provide cover as appropriate for customer support staff, medical laboratory assistants, laboratory scientists, biomedical scientists, Laboratory Lead/senior biomedical scientists and Laboratory service managers.
- To comply with safe working practices in accordance with Company safety policies.
- To participate in the Annual Joint Staff Review process, in accordance with Company Policy.
- To support other areas of the business as requested by your line manager, following suitable training.
- To perform any other duties as may be reasonably required commensurate with grade and experience.
Qualifications
