Job Description

Automotive Regional Controller

 

Sonic Automotive operates 85 franchised dealerships and 10 EchoPark pre-owned dealerships spread across 12 states and 21 major metropolitan markets. The Regional Controller is responsible for:

  • The Region’s maintenance and adherence to generally accepted accounting principles executed across the market’s retail automotive dealerships.  The role oversees adherence to the Company’s accounting policies, processes and controls, maintenance of its financial records, internal reporting practices and compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements as executed at the dealership level.  

  • Leadership and management of Store Controllers, always raising the bar to greater levels of skills, excellence, and accountability.  Leading by example, the Regional Controller will hire, build, inspire, and assess a skilled team of professionals to continually establish higher levels of service, to facilitate their partnerships with General Manager, and opportunities throughout the organization.

  • Partnering with the Regional VP, Business Unit Leaders and FP&A Group to assist with design, development and implementation of best in class annual strategic plan and associated store level budgets. 

  • Driving creative thought processes, the Regional Controller must have the ability to independently deliver company analysis that will pinpoint issues and create initiatives/solutions to pursue along with executing projects from senior management.

 

 

This position reports to the Divisional Corporate Controller, and will be located in the market, comprised of Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Northern Virginia, Maryland, DC area.

 

Essential Job Functions:

 

  • Supervise, develop and train Store Controllers.

  • Develop productive and effective collaborative relationships with Operations leadership, particularly the Regional Operations VP, and Business Unit Leaders

  • Set the example of collaborative Operations relationships for all dealership Controllers with their General Managers.

  • Lead the Region’s dealerships adherence to generally accepted accounting principles and appropriate financial internal controls (SOX compliance).

  • Ensure dealership Controllers execute Daily Operating Controls, Financial Statements and Work Papers, with a particular emphasis on accuracy, reliability and rationality.

  • Provide financial analyses in the delivery of daily operations and Management Operating Reviews.

  • Responsible for creation and consolidation of annual Store Controller business plan and strategic plan financial budgets and quarterly updates.

  • Work closely with Directors of Shared Services and Payroll to continue to streamline processes, bring additional transactional items into the centralized environment and gain headcount efficiencies at the store level.

  • Provide inspirational and motivational leadership to the Region’s Store Controller Team, ensuring clear strategic direction, continuous improvement in efficiencies and consistent accounting practices.

  • Coordinate and lead the execution of internal and external audit processes across dealership operations.

  • Responsible for financial diligence on dealership M&A activities and management of inter-company diligence resources, as well as assisting in financial modeling for valuation purposes.

  • Key internal reference for dealership accounting issues research and solution identification - close partner to business operations and finance teams.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, MBA, CPA preferred

  • High competence with dealership management systems (CDK preferred), Hyperion, Essbase Excel and MicroStrategy

  • 10+ years of experience with progressive financial leadership roles with a public company; or a company with GAAP and SOX compliance requirements

  • Financial Planning and Analysis experience with high competency in data analytics, business, and quantitative skills

  • Strong leadership and technical skills with the ability to manage, direct, and highlight issues impacting the financial profitability of the organization. 

  • Aptitude to bring a creative, innovative, and sophisticated approach to this function elevating the standards for this role while utilizing value added principles.

  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 75%
