Job Description

The Medical Science Liaison Manager (MSLM) is responsible for providing leadership, strategic direction, and day-to-day line management and coaching for the assigned MSL team and related activities for a therapeutic area (s) within the Medical department, reporting directly to the Therapeutic Area Medical Lead Metabolic Disease (TAML). The MSL Manager ensures that the MSL team provides high-quality scientific and clinical information to healthcare professionals and supports the company's medical and business objectives, fostering strong relationships with key external experts (KOLs) and other relevant stakeholders, contributes to the design of the Local Medical Plan (LMP) in close collaboration with the Medical Advisor of the assigned therapeutic area(s), and is accountable for developing the Field Medical plan (FMP) as part of the LMP. Other duties include but are not limited to strategic planning, personnel management, performance management process, data analysis, generation of metrics, people development and training. The MSLs Manager will ensure field medical operation effectiveness and strict medical compliance in MSL daily activities.

Location

This role is field-based, requiring at least 40 % of working time in travels based on local/role need. The MSL Manager can be based everywhere in Italy.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership of the MSL Function

  • Provides leadership, strategic direction, and day-to-day line management and coaching for the assigned MSL team and related activities for a therapeutic area (s) within the Medical department
  • Ensures that the MSL team provides high-quality scientific and clinical information to healthcare professionals and supports the company's medical and business objectives, fostering strong relationships with key external experts (KOLs) and other relevant stakeholders
  • Contributes to the design of the Local Medical Plan (LMP) in close collaboration with the Medical Advisor of the assigned therapeutic area(s), and is accountable for developing the Field Medical plan (FMP) as part of the LMP
  • Ensure field medical operation effectiveness and strict medical compliance in MSL daily activities.
  • Foster a healthy and psychologically safe team environment, inspiring and motivating strategic mindset, innovation, feedback and open communications while welcoming diversity, respect and inclusion
  • Responsible for annual performance management and individual development plans processes, contributing to the organizational talent review process for the MSL team as well as succession planning
  • Provides continuous coaching, mentoring and guidance to MSLs regarding their individual performance and self-leadership development
  • Provides regular feedback and coaching based on in-field observations and feedback from other team and/or cross-functional team members
  • Recruit, hire and on-board a high performing team of MSLs in conjunction with others, optimizing resources according to the assigned team priorities
  • Ensures MSL team members update and maintain all required databases with current and complete information, including the appropriate documentation of responses to unsolicited requests from external stakeholders

Scientific Communication & Field Excellence, Operational & Budget Oversight

  • Guides and monitor the execution of the FMPs s plans, and ensure the field medical education and scientific engagement plans are tailored to external stakeholders needs in alignment with medical objectives
  • Designs the strategic FMP in close collaboration with the Medical Advisor as part of the Local Medical Plan
  • Regular monitoring of MSL metrics ensuring adherence in accordance to Sobi’s requirements and guidance provided, while highlighting the field medical value to the business by sharing MSL achievements internally

Insight Generation & Strategic Contribution

  • Coordinates the collection and reporting of consolidated actionable insights from KOL and other relevant stakeholders that may impact Sobi’s strategy and related tactics, conveying the field medical voice at cross-functional strategic meetings to inform and co-create the local strategy

KOL Strategy & External Engagement Oversight

  • Ensures high scientific standards for MSLs interactions with key external experts (KOLs) and other relevant stakeholders, reporting of systematic insights gathering projects and facilitating valuable cross-functional collaborations in the field leading to effective account plans.

Evidence Generation Support

  • Contributes in identifying and partnering on potential projects that would enhance organizational impact and/or lead to successful execution of the medical objectives

Team Leadership, Development & Capability Building

  • Build up MSLs capabilities to ensure high quality scientific engagements, ensuring they have the necessary tools, training, and materials to perform effectively.
  • Ensure continuous strategic learning and understanding of the therapeutic area(s) and interpretation of analytics to inform and maximize MSL Core Capabilities and the whole medical/company strategy
  • Ensure all medical activities implemented strictly adhere to Sobi SOPs/guidance, in full compliance with and local regulations and industry code Cross‑Functional Collaboration
  • Interfaces regularly and synergizes effectively with other members of the Medical Team and with different cross-functional stakeholders to ensure all in-field teams are collaborating effectively to reach Sobi’s objectives
  • Collaborates closely with other MSL Manager(s) regarding standardization and consistency of MSL for a common approach towards field medical excellence, identifying opportunities for cross-functional integration of MSL roles and activities in the field
  • Foster and inspire the MSL team to enhance cross-functional collaborations and synergies as key scientific partners

Qualifications

  • Pharma Degree, PhD, MD or other post-graduate degree in health/life sciences
  • A minimum of 5 years clinical, scientific/research, or pharma industry related experience or equivalent with at least two of those years as an MSL
  • Demonstrated experience in managing products during launch phases in a cross functional environments
  • Proven People Management experience: previous experience managing and developing teams is required, including direct responsibility for performance management, coaching, talent development, and fostering a high-performance culture
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills
  • Results-oriented, positive, resilient attitude, flexibility in adapting/reacting within the working environment as well as to changing market dynamics and competitive challenges.
  • Strong analytical, planning, organizational, and negotiation skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and able to identify and analyze the needs of the business, translate problems into business opportunities.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and work effectively and collaboratively on cross-functional teams in a dynamic field-based environment.
  • Curious, grow mindset and active listening skills.
  • Experience in the relevant therapeutic area is preferred
  • Knowledge of the Healthcare System as well as the guidelines relevant to the pharmaceutical industry
  • Strong commitment to compliance with rules and procedures, quality and integrity reflected in all actions and behaviors.
  • Excellent written and spoken English

  • The salary range for this role is €65,000 to €95,000 gross per year, depending on the candidate’s level of experience, seniority, and demonstrated competencies.
