Job Description
Job Purpose:
Responsibilities:
Responsible for the timely and accurate completion of tasks in several areas of applications engineering:
- Accompany sales staff on visits to customer sites to identify and understand customer needs
- Document all customer mechanical, electrical, and thermal requirements for each project
- Qualify and Communicate product opportunities
- Collaborate with Engineering to drive “designs wins” based on best technical solution
- Review assembly and sub-assembly drawings to ensure solution meets customer requirements
- Facilitating corporate standards and cost efficiencies
- Driving growth within our product segment(s)
- Maintain and communicate understanding of technical trends driving our markets and competition as well as track customer roadmaps
- Help to define new products and new applications
- Develop detailed specifications and application notes for new products; contribute content to technical collateral materials
- Maintain customer file sets which include status report, design rules, cross references, and roadmap for use by global FAE’s and other departments
- Support field issues and repairs themselves, with local machine shop or factory
- Initiate Eng Change Requests to address new customer standards or resolve issues
- Educate sales staff or any other internal/external personnel about both new and existing products
- Compliance and participation in all Smiths Interconnect EHS programs, policies, procedures and training requirements
Qualifications
Technical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Well-organized and self-motivated
- Ability to identify and support change and continuous improvement
- Ability to maintain customer accounts and sensitive information with discretion and confidentiality
- The understanding and recognition of the organizations commercial environment and positioning themselves, their role and their actions to support the organizations commercial success.
- The ability to engage, challenge and work effectively with others both internal and external
- Possess strong written and verbal skills including public speaking and presentation
- Knowledge of the market; techniques and principles.
- Ability to work directly with customers on resolution of complex technical issues
- Provide innovative solutions to complex problems
- Familiar with Solidworks CAD software and PDM
- Ability to complete Monte Carlo alignment analysis via Minitab a plus
- Ability to complete Structural FEA using Solidworks a plus
- Understanding of PCB’s as it relates to Smiths products
- Ability to debug mechanical, thermal, electrical issues at customer site
Travel %: Must be willing to travel locally approximately 40% - 50% of the time

Planning and Decision Making:
- Ability to manage many projects, tasks, and meet deadlines
- Responsible for making final technical decisions and approvals for projects
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in making business decisions
Impact and Scope:
- . Responsible for individual customers in Americas region as well as coordination with global counterparts related to non-Americas customer sites and subcontractors.
Identified training mandatory for the role to be completed competently.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering and/or direct professional experiences in a related background of 3-5 years required. On the job training will also be provided.
- Ability to effectively use all Microsoft Office products-Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams.
Key Internal & External Stakeholders & Relationships
- External: Direct customers as well as customer equipment vendors such as ATE tester, handler and prober.
Internal: Sales, CSR, RD&T/Eng, QA, PLM are primary and most other Smiths departments as needed.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to use manual and electric hand tools, microscopes, and have fine motor skills for spring probe replacement and/or repairs.
