Job Description
Smiths Detection is seeking a highly motivated 2025 Summer Intern to join our team. As a Industrial Engineering Intern, you will gain hands-on experience working with cutting-edge technologies in a dynamic and collaborative environment. As a Smiths Detection intern, you will have the opportunity to experience, first-hand, the type of work we do within Smiths Detection. You will be responsible for analyzing and improving existing processes while playing a key role in driving for better productivity and cost effectiveness across the operations organization. Key to identifying and implementing changes to improve employee, facility and system performance while maintaining or improving safety, quality and customer service.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities:
The selected intern will working with a Mentor Industrial Engineer (or Supervisor) and will:
- Improving work methods through application of Lean techniques such as VSM, Continuous flow, Workplace organization 5S, Cycle time, time studies, Ergonomic, Define Waste, TPM program
- Work on targeted projects individually, or in small teams using a hands on approach
- Support Operations with input and guidance for improving utilization of resources and cost benefit analysis
- Performing analyses, developing metrics and applicable reports
- Utilizing Auto CAD to design, redesign and enhance work areas and layouts to maximize ergonomics, space utilization, efficiency and reduce repetitive motions
Qualifications
Education: Degree-track undergraduate or graduate student in Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent field).
Experience: Basic understanding of engineering principles required. Experience using 3D design software (SolidWorks preferred). Knowledge of contemporary lean principles also preferred.
Knowledge skills/other attributes:
- Ability to work in matrixed environment with different profession types (i.e. engineers, software developers, project managers, etc.)
- Effective statistical analysis skills
- Effective research and communication skills
- Enthusiasm, idealism, creativity and dedication to getting results
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently
- Ability to interact and communicate effectively across business units
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills
- Auto Cad Program Experience
- US Citizen preferred; ability to pass a background check and security vetting required

The compensation for this position ranges from $15.00 - $35.00/hr and will vary depending on factors including level of school completed and type of position requirements for skills, whether technical or non-technical.
