Job Description

An Electrical Engineer within Smiths Detection Inc. (SDI) must be results oriented with the ability to organize, prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously. In addition, they must manage project schedules to meet changing needs and requirements. Some key deliverables are:

  • Designing electrical parts and assemblies based on requirements provided by scientists and engineers, or self-performed analyses.
  • Examining, preparing and verifying technical drawings and specifications of electrical systems, to ensure that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements.
  • Analyzing engineering sketches, specifications and related data and drawings to determine design factors.
  • Designing and planning the layout of electrical assemblies to customer requirements.
  • Working independently using written feedback, general standards, and guidelines.
  • Work directly with Scientists and Engineers to determine component requirements and design details.
  • Perform electrical engineering analysis in order to properly design and document components and assemblies.
  • Self-check drawings as well as check drawings created by other designers and/or engineers.  Solicit feedback and drawing critiques from other internal staff as well as provide similar feedback to other internal staff.
  • Work with other SDI sites and assist with engineering drawings and document control/approval process.
  • Able to work as an engineering technician to support other engineers with assembling products and building wire harnesses.
  • Present and defend designs and drawings at Design Reviews to internal staff and management.
  • Ability to understand complex problems and collaborate with others to provide effective solutions.
  • Has in-depth knowledge in own discipline and basic knowledge of related disciplines; resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways. 

Qualifications

Education: 

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering required

Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience as an Electrical Engineer in a production/manufacturing environment required
  • 3+ years of experience in Solidworks or other CAD tools such as Inventor required
  • 2+ years direct experience in designing custom PLC control panels using CAD electrical tools like Altium required
  • Experience in electrical board repairs and building prototypes required
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required
  • 1-2 years of firmware development experience, preferred

Knowledge/skills:

  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, assembly drawings and wire lists required
  • Sound knowledge in Electrical/Electronic Design and Installation required

Background: This position may require Sensitive Security Information (SSI) access and vetting via the TSA. If required, applicant must successfully pass a federal background investigation. This position may require a U.S. Personal Security Clearance.

  • The individual’s primary workplace is located in the Edgewood facility there are no exposures to unusual elements.
  • This position requires access to ITAR, EAR, and Department of State or Department of Commerce controlled information and routine access to a cleared facility. Applicant must be a U.S. Person (citizen, green card holder or other permanent resident or protected resident).

The compensation for this position ranges from $76,260.00 - $177,940.00/yr and will vary depending on factors such as your location, skills, job-related knowledge, and experience. The compensation package may also include incentive compensation opportunities in the form of discretionary annual bonus or commissions.
