Job Description
Provides engineering expertise in designing different types of connectors and cable harnesses, to ensure that all products are designed, procured, and built, in accordance with customer and company quality requirements.
- Design & develop new connectors and redesign existing connector products to meet customer needs and specifications.
- Perform / Create / Update product design guidelines, customer standards, and / or analytical reports as assigned.
- Provide technical support to organizational stakeholders such as Production, Quality, Marketing and Sales, on need basis.
- Investigate and suggest solutions to Principal Engineer and Engineering Manager regarding product related problems/improvements.
- Propose alternative designs to suit a specific application/customer need/ gain cost benefit, by incorporating changes such as material properties, design features, manufacturing process etc.
- Identify potential opportunities for cost savings/improvements.
- Transforming concepts into prototypes for testing, validating and improvement for mass volume production.
- Evaluating and implementing Design Changes Requests.
- Providing technical support and input to purchasing and material/component suppliers.
- Managing ECO (Engineering Change Order) process from start to finish.
- Identify needs and participate in training & development of self.
- Demonstrate behaviors consistent with company policies.
- Develop Engineering knowledge in the areas of materials plastics, metals, elastomers and manufacturing processes associated with making cables and connectors, such as thermoplastic injection moldings, Swiss screw machines, progressive die stamping, die casting, soldering, adhesive bonding, etc.
- Participate in the First Article Reports process for tooling (Injection molds, Stamping, etc.) Approve or disapprove acceptance of tooling production.
- Any other duty as required by the job.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering or equivalent; 4-8 years of work experience in design of different types of components - sheet metal, machined, castings, plastic molded parts.
- Knowledge of engineering mechanics, material properties, physics and manufacturing methods.
- Familiar with the effects of mechanical component design on its functions/performance.
- Expertise in 3D modeling software (preferably SolidWorks) & understanding of GD&T, IEC/EN/ANSI/ASME standards (e.g. EN 61984).
- Excellent communication, organizational and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with diverse global teams in a fast-paced environment and adapt to work in different time zones.
- Well versed with Routine Test and Type Test requirements for connectors.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Be able to travel domestically and internationally to meet with customers/suppliers to conduct design reviews and technical presentations.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office tools such as Excel, Word, Power point.
- Preferred skills and qualifications:
- Experience with Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA), Problem solving tools, RCA.
- Experience on electrical contact design, understanding of surface treatment, connector design for applications such as Rail, Automotive, Defense, Aerospace, Medical industry, cable harness design, shall be an added advantage.
- Experience on Finite Element Analysis (structural, thermal & fluid). Knowledge and hands-on experience with simulation software such as ANSYS.
- Prior experience of working in multi-cultural/geographical teams would be preferred.
