Job Description

Shriners Hospitals for Children's Clinical Research Department is looking for student volunteers to participate as interventionists in an intense therapy camp for children with Cerebral Palsy (CP). The camp is 8:30AM-4:00PM every Saturday from January 4th through April 4th.

Shriners Hospital - Portland is the lead site in a multi-center study examining the differences in outcomes for children/youth with diplegic CP following 90 hours of intense therapy (called "HABIT-ILE") dosed in two different formats. Volunteers have the chance to directly work with our Clinical Research professionals to learn more about how studies are conducted. You will also learn how to play with and engage children with disabilities.

As an interventionist, you and one other volunteer will work directly with the child on upper- and lower-extremity activities through playing in a fun camp setting. The activities vary depending on the goals of each individual child, and you will receive guidance and support from our Physical Therapist and Occupational Therapist supervisors, in addition to our Clinical Research Principal Investigators. The camp includes a 4-hour training session to prepare you for working with patients, including HIPAA training.

HABIT-ILE is designed to incorporate structured bimanual tasks with increasing motor difficulty, and Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) that require the use of both hands while engaging the trunk and lower extremity postural control. Activities are progressed from less to more difficult, depending on each child's success at the current level. All tasks and activities are graded, and there are three categories of activities: (1) activities performed at a table, (2), ADLs performed standing and/or walking, and (3) gross motor play/physical activities.

Preference will be given to students of the following disciplines: Early Education, Health and Human Development, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and all natural sciences. Call Susan Sienko, PhD at (503) 221-3481 for more information or to sign up. If you have more questions about on boarding, call Raquel Lemire at (503) 294-3243.
