Job Description
The Welder I performs highly skilled welding and fabrication work on various metals, including exotic metals and new alloys. This position requires expertise in welding thin-wall materials, producing full-penetration welds, and completing work that meets stringent nondestructive inspection standards.
DUTIES
- Fuses all types and thicknesses of metal parts together, including exotic metals by means of an electric welding apparatus
- Welds products, which must qualify under all inspection techniques such as nondestructive inspection techniques such as radiography and fluorescent penetrant and the use of purging chambers.
- Performs all types of welds in all positions by heliarc and metallic arc processes.
- Assists in the development of new and improved welding and joining techniques.
- Sets up and lays out any assembly up to and including highly complex multiple-plane assemblies.
- Sets up work for LG 6 and lower-graded welders, including work on automatic welding equipment.
- Trains lower-grade employees on welding processes, specifications, and techniques.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by supervision.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Can fully purge welds for full penetration welds and prevention of burn-through
- Must be able to weld materials with a wall thickness of .005”
- Knowledge of blueprints, welding specifications, properties of metals (including exotic and new alloys), gases, welding rods, fluxes, and purging chambers
Qualifications
- Previous experience in a professional welding position is required.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Relevant welding certification or degree is preferred
- Demonstrated ability to produce full-penetration purge welds while preventing burn-through.
- Ability to weld materials with wall thicknesses as thin as 0.005 inch.
- Thorough knowledge of:
- Drawing reading and interpretation
- Welding specifications, procedures, and techniques
- Properties of metals, including exotic metals and new alloys
- Welding gases, rods, and fluxes
- Purging methods and purging chambers
- Nondestructive inspection requirements
- Successful completion of required pre-employment testing.
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, off-shifts, and other flexible hours as needed to support production and maintenance requirements.
Additional Information
This position is part of the bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
Base Hourly Pay: $32.94/hr; 2nd shift premium as applicable: $1.00/hr
