Job Description

ACLU California Action (ACLU CA Action) is seeking a Manager of Finance and Administration. This new and critical leadership position is full time and will be based in our office in Sacramento, California.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Manager of Finance and Administration will manage the organization’s $3 million operating budget and supervise one assistant. The Manager will work closely with the Executive Director, Director of State Government Relations, Director of Statewide Collaboration, and Strategic Communications Manager to provide leadership of the business operations of the organization. This includes having primary responsibility for financial management, human resources, operations, and technology.  Additionally, the Manager will collaborate and consult with peers across the ACLU California affiliates and the National ACLU.

Position Objectives & Primary Responsibilities

Budgeting and Financial Management

  • Create and monitor ACLU CA Action’s budget and finances

  • Work with outside contractors to maintain and administer accounting system and prepare timely financial reports

  • Direct accounts payable and accounts receivable functions

  • Serve as primary contact for vendors, auditor, bookkeepers, and other contractors and specialists

Human Resources

  • Provide overall leadership and coordination of full range of HR needs

  • In collaboration with Executive Director,  act as the owner of all employee relations matters

  • Serve as the primary contact with TriNet (human resources vendor) and other human resources specialists

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB)

  • Assist Executive Director with incorporating DEIB goals into HR practices and into the organization’s climate and culture, including but not limited to:

    • Administering an annual workplace climate survey

    • Conducting a compensation study and review of equitable advancement opportunities

    • Curating professional development and team-building opportunities throughout the year that engender mutual respect, understanding, and accountability in commission of ACLU Cal Action’s mission

    • Establishing performance-based metrics that affirm ACLU Cal Action’s DEIB organizational culture and climate goals

Compliance

  • Submit timely and accurate lobbying reports to FPPC and ensure compliance with all other state and federal laws related to nonprofit organizations, lobbying, and political activity, with the support of outside vendors

  • Collaborate with an outside accounting firm on an annual audit of the finances

  • Ensure necessary levels of insurance, address issues of risk, and act as primary contact for insurance providers

Operations and IT

  • Ensure that the ACLU CA Action office and any remote employees have the administrative and operational resources needed to carry out their work

  • Provide oversight of the ACLU CA Action Sacramento office, including relations with the landlord, facilities issues, etc.

  • Direct the organization’s overall IT systems, hardware and software, working with contractors, specialists, and service providers

Other Administrative Duties

  • Analyze and report on operational and administrative data and systems

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and staff

Qualifications

Position-Specific Skills

  • Significant experience gained in senior financial and/or operational positions including experience in financial management, administration, and human resources

  • Advanced experience in creating and managing organizational budgets

  • Knowledge of fund accounting, GAAP and FASB requirements as applied to nonprofit organizations, and other government regulations specific to nonprofits

  • Experience with FPPC reporting and rules

  • Demonstrated experience applying principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in previous work

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to represent the organization to the public as well as interface with staff, Board members, vendors, and contractors while maintaining tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality

  • Personal alignment with ACLU CA Action’s mission and values

Desired Skills

  • Track record of executing in fast-paced, high-change environments

  • Experience working with nonprofit and/or lobbying organizations

  • Experience working with unions in a management capacity

Additional Information

Compensation and Benefits

  • The compensation range for this position is $95,000–$125,000 and is commensurate with knowledge, skills, and experience
