Job Description

The Phlebotomist / Lab Assistant performs duties typically expected of a Phlebotomist, including drawing blood from normal human volunteers, preparing specimens for the Normal Blood Donor Service (NBDS) department and monitoring vital signs. Performs clerical and/or administrative support duties for identifying, screening and scheduling donors and coordinates payment to said donors.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
* Recruits, screens, and schedules potential blood donor participants.
* Collects, records and monitors donor vital signs.
* Collects and/or prepares blood specimens in a high-volume environment.
* Performs standard laboratory procedures, including blood processing, blood typing and DNA extraction.
* Performs administrative duties associated with lab records and processing payments.
* Updates department website for NBDS.
* May perform other duties as assigned or necessary.

Qualifications

* Licensure as a certified State of California Phlebotomist, CPTI or CPTII required. If not, RN / LVN.
* 1 or more years of phlebotomy experience required.
* One year of clinical laboratory experience working in a high-volume lab preferred.
* Demonstrated ability, hand/finger strength and dexterity to collect and process approximately 6 draws within 2.5 hours, daily.
* Current CPR and AED certification required.
* Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently.
* Strong communication skills with demonstrated ability to relate well to NBDS donors and staff.
* Strong PC skills with proficiency in MS Word, Excel and Databases.
* Customer service skills and a positive attitude

This position works in a clinical laboratory environment. Performs repetitive motions such as grasping, rotating, twisting, and reaching with fingers, hands and arms requiring strength, dexterity and stamina. Must be able to sit or stand for several hours. Must be able to bend and stoop. With or without corrective lenses, must be able to see.
