Job Description
As a Medical Science Liaison (MSL), you will serve as a trusted scientific partner to healthcare professionals, Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), and internal stakeholders, helping advance medical knowledge, support research initiatives, and deliver meaningful scientific exchange across the ophthalmology community.

About the Role
The Medical Science Liaison is a field-based Medical Affairs professional responsible for building and maintaining scientific relationships with healthcare professionals, KOLs, academic researchers, and other stakeholders. The role supports the execution of medical strategies, scientific education, evidence generation, and cross-functional collaboration while ensuring the highest standards of scientific integrity, ethics, and compliance.
The MSL provides expert medical and scientific support to external stakeholders and internal colleagues while contributing to the advancement of ophthalmology through scientific exchange, research collaboration, and educational initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Scientific Engagement & Insight Generation
- Develop and maintain trusted scientific relationships with ophthalmology KOLs, healthcare professionals, academic institutions, and relevant stakeholders.
- Deliver high-quality scientific exchange and provide accurate, balanced, and up-to-date medical information on Santen products, pipeline assets, and therapeutic areas.
- Gather scientific insights, clinical trends, unmet medical needs, and customer feedback, and communicate findings to internal stakeholders to inform medical and business strategies.
- Respond to scientific and medical inquiries using the latest available evidence and approved resources.
Medical Education & Scientific Communication
- Present clinical and scientific data to physicians, hospital practitioners, formulary committees, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Support the development and delivery of scientific educational materials and customer training initiatives.
- Deliver scientific training to internal stakeholders, including Medical Affairs and cross-functional colleagues.
- Represent Santen at local, national, and international congresses, identifying relevant scientific developments and engaging with key experts.
Research & Evidence Generation
- Support local sites participating in Santen-sponsored studies and Medical Affairs projects.
- Collaborate with investigators and publication teams to support scientific publications, abstracts, and presentations.
- Identify research opportunities and facilitate evidence-generation activities relevant to Santen products and therapeutic areas.
- Assist with the implementation and administration of Investigator-Sponsored Trials (ISTs) and local research studies where appropriate.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Market Access, Medical Information, and other internal stakeholders to support medical objectives.
- Support market access initiatives through the provision of scientific and clinical expertise.
- Collaborate with patient associations and identify opportunities for partnership and patient-focused initiatives.
- Provide support for pharmacovigilance and medical information activities as required.
Compliance & Ethical Conduct
- Conduct all activities in full compliance with the French deontological rules governing Medical Science Liaison activities as established by LEEM and in accordance with Santen's local Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Ensure strict separation between medical and promotional activities in all interactions with healthcare professionals and external stakeholders.
- Maintain clear and compliant boundaries between Medical Affairs and Commercial functions, ensuring that scientific engagements are conducted independently from Sales Force activities.
- Adhere to all applicable pharmacovigilance, transparency, compliance, and ethical standards governing interactions with healthcare professionals, healthcare organizations, and patient associations.
What You'll Bring
- University degree in Life Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy, Biology, or a related scientific discipline.
- Fluency in French and English is a must.
- Minimum 1 year of experience as a Medical Science Liaison or in a comparable field-based Medical Affairs role.
- Willingness to travel extensively across France (up to 70%) with occasional European and international travel.
Qualifications
- Ability to rapidly learn, interpret, and communicate complex clinical, scientific, and medical information.
- Excellent presentation, teaching, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Strong scientific credibility and ability to engage healthcare professionals at a peer-to-peer level.
- Proven ability to build effective cross-functional relationships within a pan-European or international environment.
- Strong influencing and stakeholder management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, creatively, and proactively.
- Excellent organizational, prioritization, and time-management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in ophthalmology.
- Knowledge of clinical research processes and scientific publication activities.
What we offer:
The salary range for the Medical Science Liaison France position is EUR 64,000 - EUR 88,000 gross/year depending on experience.
