Sampoerna University was founded in Jakarta in 2015 to provide an internationally oriented university education built around American standards.  From its inception, the University incorporated English-medium instruction, a U.S.-aligned credit structure, liberal arts based general education core curriculum, American benchmarked faculty standards, and academic systems designed around the expectations of U.S. accreditation. 

The University is fully licensed and accredited in Indonesia and is institutionally accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE).  It is the only university in Indonesia and Southeast Asia that currently holds U.S. institutional accreditation.  As a result, the official name of the University is being changed from Sampoerna University to The American University of Indonesia in Q4 of 2026.

AUI represents the next stage of development of the institution.  AUI will create a substantially more intensive American university experience for students in Indonesia.  Its initial academic strategy centers on developing flagship programs in Business and Computer Science/Artificial Intelligence, followed over time by additional programs in high-demand business and STEM-related fields.

For faculty members who are exceptional teachers, interested in Asia, energized by institution-building, and attracted by the opportunity to have an impact well beyond their individual classrooms, the founding faculty of the AUI Flagship School of Business offers a unique professional opportunity.

These positions are intentionally described as founding faculty appointments.  The first full-time faculty members of the Flagship School of Business will help establish traditions, expectations, curriculum, student experiences, and academic culture that will influence the School for many years.

Teaching and Academic Responsibilities

The Founding Business Lecturers will teach courses within the Flagship School of Business and contribute to the broader intellectual life of the University.  Teaching assignments will depend upon academic background and the needs of the School.  Areas of particular interest include:

The University is particularly interested in faculty members who can teach across more than one area of the curriculum.

Faculty will be expected to use contemporary, student-centered instructional approaches characteristic of high-quality business education, including case analysis, discussion-based teaching, team projects, simulations, presentations, applied research, and engagement with practicing business leaders.

All courses are taught in English. 

Corporate and External Engagement

Jakarta provides an exceptional environment for business education.  It is the commercial center of Indonesia and home to major Indonesian companies, multinational corporations, financial institutions, technology firms, entrepreneurial ventures, and professional service organizations.

Required Qualifications

Candidates should possess:

• A doctoral degree in Business or an appropriate business discipline from an accredited institution
• Demonstrated expertise in one or more areas of the business curriculum
• Evidence of effective university teaching
• Excellent English-language communication skills
• Ability to teach and mentor students in a multicultural environment
• Demonstrated commitment to student-centered higher education
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and academic leadership
• Experience in contributing to curriculum and academic program development

Strongly Preferred Experience

Strong candidates will also demonstrate one or more of the following:

• Teaching experience at an accredited U.S. college or university
• Academic training at a U.S. university
• Professional experience in business or industry
• International teaching or professional experience
• Experience with experiential or project-based learning
• Development of business cases or simulations
