Job Description

As the Process Engineering Manager your role is to lead and manage all staff within the process team across the organization while also being engaged in technical work. Reporting to the Director of Energy you will be an integral part of SDE’s Energy division while also supporting other business divisions and stakeholders. To be successful in this role you will need to have a passion for people management while also being highly organized and able to effectively manage and execute on multiple projects, priorities and deadlines.

We are open to working remotely for the right candidate however some travel may be required based on the needs of projects and clients.

Responsibilities

Leading 

  • Leadership and management of the process engineering department
  • Motivate teams and deliver results in a manner that upholds our professional standards in an inclusive and passionate manner
  • Lead others without authority (business line leaders, engineering leads, project managers)
  • Provide technical oversight and mentorship on all process engineering work
  • Developing new technologies and technology scale up processes
  • Building the capabilities of the process engineering team
  • Brainstorming, ideation and solution development for reducing carbon intensity of client operations
  • Maintain list of current vendors and available equipment for process design packages

Customer Focus

  • Responsible for the quality of all process engineering work within the company
  • Translating complex concepts into non-technical terms to enable all stakeholders to understand the process and steps involved
  • Supporting business development activities by establishing and maintaining client relationships, developing business leads, and developing opportunities
  • Write proposals, cost estimates, schedules, and other documentation that supports Business Development for incisive proposals that directly address the client’s strategic objectives
  • Provide high quality project deliverables, on time and on budget to establish a reputation for superior project delivery

Management

  • Oversee daily activities of the team, manage the workload and forecasting of staffing needs within the department
  • Work with teams across North America and Asia effectively
  • Provide mentoring and development opportunities for process engineers; make recommendations for training and development
  • Assess performance, provide feedback and performance coaching to team members
  • Develop a team of contractors to balance the resourcing swings of our business
  • Establish high technical and performance standards
  • Review and confirm engineering deliverables are complete and technically accurate
  • Acts as lead process engineer to manage and deliver all the technical and project execution elements with certainty
  • Evaluate and maintain department tools and design standards for efficient delivery of consulting engineering services

Qualifications

  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada or the USA
  • 12 - 15 years of relevant, progressive technical and managerial experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field from a recognized institution
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer with applicable local association    
  • Experience with one or more of the following areas/technologies: next generation renewable energy/fuels and chemicals (e.g. co-processing of biogenic feedstocks, AD systems, etc.), hydrogen production, carbon capture
  • Preference for experience and know-how associated with developing new technologies, technology/process scale-up
  • Experience delivering major projects (to 200MM TIC)
  • Well experienced with delivering multiple, small brownfield upgrade projects simultaneously
  • Skilled in developing process simulations (AspenPlus, HYSYS, etc.) and using industry standard hydraulic assessment tools. Experience with dynamic simulations will be an asset
  • Team builder and facilitator, skilled in interpersonal interactions and presentations    
  • Ability to effectively communicate and positively guide team members, articulate and highly proficient language skills
  • Preference for bilingual (English/French)
  • Ability to travel to customer sites and all SDE Regional Offices
  • Proactive with a high degree of initiative
  • Highly organized, with the ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Excellent grasp of engineering principles and experience assessing complex systems
  • Willing to broaden understanding of other engineering disciplines and coordinate with them on business development, project execution, and process improvements
