Since 1976, St. Joseph Center has been meeting the needs of low-income and homeless individuals and families in Venice, Santa Monica, Mar Vista, and surrounding communities.  The Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community organization that assists people without regard for religious affiliation or lack thereof through comprehensive case management and integrated social service programs.  The Center enjoys broad-based community support as well as a sponsored relationship with its founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.  St. Joseph Center serves approximately 6,000 individuals annually.

Brief Description of Principal Activities

Multifaceted intervention, prevention, and education services are carried out at four sites on the Westside of Los Angeles.  St. Joseph Center’s integrated programs provide clients with concentrated and coordinated access to services according to the nature of their needs.

Job Summary

The Case Manager works as a team member with program staff and social service professionals to uplift students throughout culinary training while focusing on addressing barriers that may impede engagement, graduation, and job placement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Bread & Roses Training Kitchen Case Manager’s key areas of responsibility include:  

Key Areas of Responsibility:  

▪ Provide therapeutic interventions to uplift students and develop life skills, including, but not limited to accessing community resources, maintaining residence, money management, cultivating a growth mindset, and other skills as needed.  

▪ Provide ongoing, individualized and care-centered case management services that will ensure successful vocational goals, increase quality of life, and empower self-sufficiency.

▪ Provide advocacy and linkage to any needed or supportive services or resources, such as mental health, rental assistance, food access, benefits programs, etc. 

▪ Implement case management goals emphasizing collaborative strategies for addressing behavioral and circumstantial issues that could impede successful engagement with culinary training.   

▪ Utilize a trauma informed, harm reduction, client focused and strengths-based model. 

▪ Respond to urgent requests for assistance from students.

▪ Establish and maintain a strong and collaborative network of community partners, build trust, and engage with students and staff in a way that builds a nurturing, trauma sensitive classroom environment. 

Essential Duties: 

▪ Conduct case management check-ins with all current students on a bi-weekly basis to assess progress and needs.

▪ Report on individual progress and provide daily attendance reporting. Case conference with program staff and collaborating agencies to support student engagement.

▪ Design and facilitate trauma informed workshops that support students on current topics related to self-care, physical health, mental health, and soft skills related to work environment.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

▪ Must be persistent, creative, compassionate, culturally sensitive, and flexible.

▪ Strong connection and understanding of community resources and the ability to link and coordinate services.

▪ Strong knowledge and experience with Trauma Informed Care, Harm Reduction, Motivational Interviewing and Problem Solving.

▪ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to balance multiple priorities with proven ability to gracefully anticipate challenges and solve problems in high-pressure situations.

▪ Knowledge of client-centered case management, culturally responsive mental health services and community healing work.

▪ Openness to giving and receiving feedback.

▪ Skilled in conflict resolution and de-escalation. 

Experience:

▪ Two years’ experience providing services to highly vulnerable populations. 

Education:

▪ Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Psychology, Social Work, Human Services or a related field.

Direct Reports:

▪ This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.   

Computer Skills:

▪ Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

▪ Ability to use widely supported internet browsers.

▪ Ability to use electronic health records and other various electronic data bases. 

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations:

▪ Valid California Class C Driver License. 

▪ Valid automobile liability insurance.

Travel Requirements:

▪ Travel to client sessions, meetings at multiple St. Joseph Center sites, and at community partners’ locations as needed.

Status: Full time/Exempt

Pay Range: $22-$24/hour

At St. Joseph Center, pay ranges are set using the best available market data for the job at the required location. To determine salary for a candidate, we consider the candidate's skills and capabilities for the job compared with expectations for the position.
