Since 1976, St. Joseph Center has been meeting the needs of low-income and homeless individuals and families in Venice and throughout Los Angeles County.  The Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community organization that assists people without regard for religious affiliation or lack thereof through 20+ programs in four pillars of service: Outreach and Engagement, Housing Services, Mental Health, and Education and Vocational Training.  St. Joseph Center serves more than 10,000 people each year. 

Brief Description of Principal Activities

Multifaceted intervention, prevention, mental health, and housing assistance is offered through street outreach and 9 service sites throughout Los Angeles County. St. Joseph Center also provides on-site services at five permanent supportive housing developments, and will provide services at an additional six more sites in the coming year.  St. Joseph Center’s total holistic approach to services provide our clients with the help they need to regain their stability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The General Account’s key areas of responsibility include: 

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Organizes and verifies data and documents relating to admissions and terminations in accordance to contractual agreements and agency policies and procedures
  • Verifies vouchers/invoices; interfaces with agency personnel and outside agencies to resolve problems; updates invoices; prepares and mails in a timely manner.
  • Creates, codes, and enters data to billing documents. Generates and gathers data and enters it to billing system
  • Sets up and maintains files, records, and related documents
  • Enters and applies payments to the appropriate accounts; prepares/prints receivable reports
  • Organizes and reports unpaid and overpaid vouchers/invoices and requests for payment including interfacing with County or School Districts personnel relative to these transactions
  • Reconciles accounts to General Ledger; researches and follows up on discrepancies and makes correcting entries
  • Acts as liaison with auditors to provide accounting information and respond to their inquiries throughout the year
  • Gathers and analyzes accounting data and prepares various regular and special accounting reports as scheduled or requested
  • Ensures all financial reporting deadlines are met
  • Works with Controller to determine most effective procedures and drafts accounts receivable policies and procedures. As appropriate assists in the implementation of such policies and procedures
  • Develops and maintains job appropriate skills and knowledge of Federal, State, and Local, laws, through seminars, publications, workshops or other forms of training/education 
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding children, families, employees, funders, accounting information and operations of St. Joseph Center

Experience:

  • Minimum of three years previous accounts receivable experience, or equivalent experience required - Nonprofit experience a plus
  • A working knowledge of accounting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles
  • Strong personal computer skills including preparation of spreadsheets and routine word processing
  • Working knowledge of accounting systems, MIP preferred
  • Ability to calculate accurately and efficiently, including ten-key skills by touch.
  • Ability to work independently, analyze accounting information and arrive at sound conclusions

Education:

  • High School Diploma; or six years of related work experience

Direct Reports:

  • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Computer Skills:

  • Computer literate (basic working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook), data/electronic records program currently in use, and other applications related to billing of services
  • Able to use telephone, office copier, calculator, fax machine, computer printer and scanner, or other equipment as required

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations:

  • Valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
  • Valid automobile liability insurance.

Status: Full-Time/Non-Exempt 

Salary: DOE
