Since 1976, St. Joseph Center has been meeting the needs of low-income and homeless individuals and families in Venice, Santa Monica, Mar Vista, and surrounding communities.  The Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community organization that assists people without regard for religious affiliation or lack thereof through comprehensive case management and integrated social service programs.  The Center enjoys broad-based community support as well as a sponsored relationship with its founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.  St. Joseph Center serves approximately 6,000 individuals annually.

Multifaceted intervention, prevention, and education services are carried out at four sites on the Westside of Los Angeles.  St. Joseph Center’s integrated programs provide clients with concentrated and coordinated access to services according to the nature of their needs.

Job Summary

The Codetalk Program Manager, under the supervision of the Division Director manages the Codetalk team ensuring the delivery of quality technical vocational training as well as adhering to the mission of St. Joseph Center.  If you are passionate about empowering people and wish to contribute in a meaningful way with your skill set and tech experience and you are willing to challenge yourself: Join a vibrant, dynamic and supportive team dedicated to changing the trajectories of low income, underemployed and underserved women through education in front end web development, and job placement in the technology sector.

Codetalk’s mission is to use a technical skillset to transform the income potential and the lives of low income and underserved women. Codetalk is an innovative program that teaches women the necessary technical and professional skills to attain entry level jobs in technology.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Division Director, the Codetalk Program Manager coordinates all aspects of the Codetalk Program including supervision of the Instructors & staff, and is responsible for student recruitment, curriculum evaluation & development, job search strategy instruction, internship coordination, job development and placement, program evaluation, curriculum enhancement, documentation and reporting.  

To implement these objectives, the Program Manager will:

  • Assist the Division Director in evaluating and selecting appropriate students for the training.  Provide students with orientation to program expectations, and coordinate interviews and selection process. Oversee student recruitment, outreach efforts and strategies, including partnering with outside recourse to identify eligible candidates.
  • Provide class time support to instructors and staff, as well as providing support to students. Supervise case manager with preemptive case management for all students. Provide support to case manager with linking and leveraging resources within and external to the agency.
  • Support and assist Instructors with teaching job search skills; provide job search assistance to students; assist in development of student resumes and job search assets. 
  • Coordinate and implement professional skill development and other skill building curriculum.
  • Establish and develop relationships with potential employers. Develop jobs, internships and employment opportunities. Record successes and track progress.
  • Maintain current program records, student case files and outcome data.  Provide reports to director, funders and Center administration. Track graduate success and record data on outcomes and successes. Maintain a current database of graduate placements and job opportunities.
  • Networking with local job developers and attending job fairs.
  • Develop along with Codetalk staff objectives, lesson plans and course materials for job search strategy curriculum. Develop and maintain program and curriculum documentation.
  • Conduct industry research to maintain up-to-date web development employment trends and opportunities; conduct research on industry-best practices among web development training programs.
  • Coordinate field trips, guest speakers, and networking events. Maintain program calendar of all program activities, including guest speakers, field trips off site, and internal and external events.
  • Coordinate updates and revisions to the program website, and online social media assets, especially LinkedIn. Coordinate with instructors to have all new students create and use Snapchat accounts.
  • Maintaining online and internal events calendars, making updates to the program websites and internal files, mailing lists including e-lists, ordering office supplies and equipment, managing office space, and maintaining office equipment.  Help to maintain and enhance program curriculum, project work, student assignments, and program materials.
  • Instruct class modules and provide support to students during instruction. Assist students during class and lab time in understanding work, completing projects and meeting requirements.
  • Monitor student progress, including attendance, academic record and progress and have periodic individual student meetings. Grade and report on student work.
  • Be available to students to answer questions during breaks and during daily lab time. You must be able to work with students of varying skill level and be sensitive to the barriers students may face to their progress.
  • Be prepared to grow and learn in your role. You must have excellent communication skills and value working as an integral part of a passionate team.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in CS or related Technology field preferred or relevant experience.
  • Must be proficient with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, GitHub, WordPress, Agile, QA UX design, Sketch, MacOS.
  • Experience in program and/or project management.
  • Professional experience in front end web development and web development or web design.
  • Management experience in an academic environment is a plus.
  • Must have excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, be proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), Google Suite, Drive, Docs, Sheets.
  • Flexible, able to prioritize & work well under pressure. Self-management of schedule.
  • Relationships with tech companies for networking & student employment opportunities a plus.
  • Comfortable with working autonomously, but also enjoy working collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with instructors, external agencies, and management staff.
  • Attentive to detail, capable of meeting deadlines and maintaining complete and accurate reports, calendars, and appointment schedules. Independent work ethic.
  • Experience with preparing and maintaining budget reports.
  • Position may occasionally require a flextime schedule to cover evening or weekend events.
  • Ability and sensitivity to work with very low income individuals.

Experience:

  • Minimum two to three years of web development experience, in a digital or engineering department.
  • Must have proven competencies with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, jQuery & GitHub
    Content Management Systems [WordPress], UX Design, UI, IA [Sketch & ability to construct wireframes] Agile/SCRUM Project Management Methodology, QA, Unix & MacOS  

Education:

  • Degree from accredited college or university OR professional Front End Web Development experience.

Direct Reports:

  • Codetalk Instructors & Staff & Case Manager.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations:

  • Valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
  • Valid automobile liability insurance.
