Since 1976, St. Joseph Center has been meeting the needs of low-income and homeless individuals and families in Venice, Santa Monica, Mar Vista, and surrounding communities.  The Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community organization that assists people without regard for religious affiliation or lack thereof through comprehensive case management and integrated social service programs.  The Center enjoys broad-based community support as well as a sponsored relationship with its founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.  St. Joseph Center serves approximately 6,000 individuals annually.

Brief Description of Principal Activities

Multifaceted intervention, prevention, and education services are carried out at four sites on the Westside of Los Angeles.  St. Joseph Center’s integrated programs provide clients with concentrated and coordinated access to services according to the nature of their needs.

Job Summary

The Psychiatrist serves as a team member with several social service professional and paraprofessional staff ensuring the delivery of quality care for contracted agencies as well as adhering to the mission of St. Joseph Center.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Psychiatrist’s key areas of responsibility and essential duties include: 

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • The psychiatrist will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team integrating mental health, physical health, and substance abuse services in defined focal populations consisting of the uninsured, homeless, and under-represented ethnic groups.  In addition, the psychiatrist will work as a team member with social service professionals and paraprofessional staff ensuring the delivery of quality care as well as adhering to the mission of St. Joseph Center.
  • The psychiatrist diagnoses patients, prescribes medications, monitors medication side effects and participates in the treatment process.

Essential Duties:

  • Complete psychiatric evaluations.
  • Evaluate clinical data and patient history.
  • Perform clinical screenings of patients and makes referrals of all conditions in need of consultation from medical and non-psychiatric specialties.
  • Review and follow up on treatments ordered by other physicians, as needed.
  • Review, approve and sign all Individual Plans of Service.
  • Participate in the Individual Plan of Service for each patient.
  • Document clients’ progress in progress notes.
  • Explain medication effects and side effects.
  • Review all non-psychiatric medical orders and prescriptions.
  • Perform crisis intervention on and off hours.
  • Consult with other staff regarding client’s progress.
  • Consult with family members or guardians, if applicable.
  • Ensure all program data is accurate and entered into the appropriate program documentation system as contractually required.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Previous experience with the Department of Mental Health paperwork.
  • Must be highly motivated and a self-starter.  Must have the ability to communicate with and relate to a diverse group of people including clients, community, and other staff.  Must have excellent administrative and organizational skills.

Education:

  • Must be Board Certified (M.D.)

Direct Reports:

  • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Computer Skills:

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and widely supported internet browsers preferred.
  • Previous experience with electronic mental health records and databases preferred.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations:

  • Valid DEA License or Certificate
  • Valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
  • Valid automobile liability insurance.
