Job Description

The Commercial Banking Manager oversees and provides leadership for Commercial Banking Officers to achieve loan and deposit goals while supporting a strong, collaborative working relationship with commercial underwriting partners. This position is responsible for all phases of the business development process including sourcing, initial analysis and evaluation of the credit worthiness of submitted loans according to STCU’s loan policies and procedures.

Principal Accountabilities
Member Relationships

  • Identify develop and market to existing members and prospective member business owners, applicable STCU products and services.
  • Provide “relationship development” training to Commercial Banking team to ensure the establishment and continuance of superior “member service culture” standards are met.  
  • Review and respond to feedback received in service surveys; recommend changes/enhancements.

Commercial and Member Business Loan Production

  • Create and implement business develop strategies for middle market businesses with $2MM to $20MM in sales.
  • Create commercial culture where Commercial Banking Officers are interested and effectively serve the entire commercial business relationship.
  • Meet or exceed individual and team loan and deposit production goals, with the authority to negotiate terms, pricing, and conditions within established parameters.
  • Work proactively with and mentor commercial banking officers in developing and maintaining sound business development and lending skills.
  • Ensure all annual loan reviews are completed in a timely manner by the staff.
  • Submit monthly production reports to the Director – Commercial and Business Services as requested.
  • Manage and monitor budget development and draw requests for construction and development lending.

Commercial Lending Trends

  • Stay informed on trends, best practices or other issues that impact the department and make recommendations on new programs and existing program improvements that enhance STCU’s commercial banking efforts.
  • Identify and recommend marketing strategies or opportunities that support the department, as well as the organization's culture and goals.

Partners

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with Business Development/Community Relations Department and branches providing expertise in commercial lending.
  • Collaborate with the Commercial Credit Administrator during negotiations of competitive loan structure and terms; requiring proactive open and transparent dialog throughout the process.
  • Participate in the overall leadership of Commercial and Business Services, partnering with the Director, Commercial Credit Administrator, Senior Commercial Underwriter, Business Banking Manager and Cash Management leadership.

Community Involvement

  • Participate in community oriented organizations and activities to promote STCU.
  • Serve on Boards or committees that champion the cause of business within the market area.

Team Development and Leadership

  • Manage the performance, training requirements, and professional development of employees, including planning, needs assessments, design and development and evaluation of leadership skills.
  • Provide effective leadership, mentoring and coaching to team members in order to assist them in reaching their career goals, increase their competency and promote team depth and unity.  
  • Communicate department direction and enable team members to perform at the highest standards.
  • Supervise the department/staff to include delegation of work assignments, coaching and feedback, rewards and recognition, and effective communication to include timely resolution of more complex departmental issues, conflicts and/or concerns.
  • Recommend and make changes in staffing levels, basic structure and/or organization of the department to ensure effective completion of objectives.
  • Requisition new positions as needed and coordinate and participate in the interviewing, hiring and training of team as necessary.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance or related field is required.
  • A minimum five years’ experience in commercial lending and/or business development including a strong working knowledge of commercial real estate and commercial and industrial lending activities.
  • A minimum three years’ experience and demonstrated leadership skills in coaching, mentoring and developing others.
  • Commercial underwriting, loan origination and commercial real estate experience is preferred.
  • Strong consultative business development skills with a commitment to providing an excellent member experience.
  • Ability to meet or exceed loan and deposit production goals.
  • Ability to create and manage networks to foster new business relationships.
  • Ability to carry out leadership responsibilities according to STCU’s policies.
  • Proficient knowledge of MS Office programs including Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to negotiate.
  • Strong interpersonal skills required, including maintaining positive relationships and excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changes and prioritize and manage competing demands.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret data and understand and communicate complex and diverse information, and effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and the general public.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations exercising flexibility and sound judgment in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to make practical and timely decisions and explain reasoning for decisions.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Strong work ethic required, including the ability to complete duties on time, consistently arrive at work on time as scheduled, and ability to work flexible hours and overtime as needed.

  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and mouse.
  • Ability to occasionally lift, pull/push, and carry up to 10 lbs.
