1. Introduction & Background

Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) are essential components of sustainable development and social justice. GESI focuses on ensuring that all individuals, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, disability, or other socio-economic factors, have equal access to opportunities, resources, and rights. This approach aims to address systemic inequalities and promote inclusive development. SNV has committed to being GESI responsive and most projects adhere to this approach. The new strategy aims for SNV to be GESI transformative sing the empowerment framework through enhancing agency, access and voice for marginalised communities and working on the enabling environment. SNV Kenya is looking to support it staff who are already engaged in GESI responsive approaches to different extends, to implement, design, budget, monitoring and evaluate GESI transformative approaches.

  • Importance of GESI in Institutions

Institutions that integrate GESI principles tend to perform better overall. Diverse and inclusive workplaces foster creativity, innovation, and better decision-making. A report by McKinsey & Company found that organizations with greater gender diversity in their leadership teams were more likely to outperform their peers financially. Additionally, inclusive practices contribute to a positive work environment, enhancing job satisfaction and reducing turnover rates. Employees who feel valued and included are more likely to remain committed and productive.

Incorporating GESI aligns institutions with international human rights frameworks, such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 5 (Gender Equality) and Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities). Furthermore, institutions that fail to address GESI issues may face reputational, financial, and legal risks. Discrimination and exclusion can lead to conflicts, legal challenges, and loss of stakeholder trust.

  • Significance of GESI in Projects

Projects that incorporate GESI principles are more likely to deliver equitable and sustainable benefits. By considering the diverse needs and perspectives of all stakeholders, projects can achieve more inclusive outcomes, ensuring that no one is left behind. Integrating GESI in project design, implementation, and evaluation leads to more effective interventions. It ensures that projects address the root causes of inequality and exclusion, leading to more impactful and lasting results.

GESI-focused projects contribute to the empowerment of marginalized groups. By involving women, People Living with Disabilities, refugees, and other disadvantaged groups in decision-making processes, projects can foster greater ownership, participation, and empowerment within communities. Sustainable development requires the active participation of all societal groups. GESI-focused projects help to build more resilient and inclusive communities, which are better equipped to adapt to social, economic, and environmental changes.

Incorporating GESI principles into institutions and projects is not only a matter of social justice but also a strategic approach to enhancing organizational performance, project effectiveness, and sustainable development. By addressing inequalities and promoting inclusion, institutions and projects can create a more equitable and prosperous society for all.
