Job Description

Are you a proactive finance professional with a collaborative mindset, ready to thrive in a global, multicultural environment? SNV is seeking a Global Accounting Advisor to join our Global Accounting Support Team (5 FTE’s) within the Global Finance department, based in The Hague, the Netherlands. The Global Accounting Team is essential in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of SNV’s financial data across all operations. This includes developing, implementing, and maintaining financial policies, improving accounting and administrative processes within our ERP system (SAP Business by Design), and ensuring compliance with Dutch General Accounting Principles.

As a Global Accounting Advisor, your role will involve providing expert guidance and support to your assigned country finance teams (4-5), driving continuous improvements in financial processes, and ensuring adherence to global accounting standards, all while contributing to SNV’s mission

Key responsibilities:

  • Expert Financial Support: Provide tailored advice and hands-on support to country finance teams on financial accounting processes, (project) accounting, and financial administration.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Analyse financial data to produce accurate, timely reports. Oversee monthly, extensive, and year-end close assessments, performing thorough checks on transactions and reconciliations if needed. Follow up with the Country Finance Managers on the findings or outstanding items during such reviews. 
  • Develop and Implement Guidelines: Create and maintain comprehensive financial accounting guidelines, including instructions for month-end, extensive, and year-end closes. Develop tools and reports to ensure consistent, compliant accounting practices across the organization.
  • Global Audit Support: Support the global audit process by delivering high-quality audit materials on time, preparing position papers for accounting estimates when needed, and reviewing deliverables from country teams. Provide coaching and guidance to ensure audit readiness.
  • Financial Review: Review financial balances for assigned countries, taking corrective actions as necessary. Lead initiatives to clear balance sheets, assess data quality, and implement improvements.
  • Process Improvement: Identify gaps in financial administration, accounting, and reporting processes. Propose and execute solutions aimed at enhancing efficiency and accuracy.
  • Risk Management: Lead periodic financial risk assessments on accounts receivable for all SNV projects, proactively identifying risks and implementing mitigation strategies.
  • Capacity Building: Develop and deliver instructions and training materials to strengthen the capabilities of country finance teams, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Qualifications

To be considered, you should also bring:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting or equivalent by experience.  
  • 4+ years of relevant experience in accounting, with a preference for those with audit experience in the Big Four accounting firms.
  • Solid expertise in periodic close and financial reporting processes of group companies; knowledge of accounting standards (SNV applies for group financial statements Dutch GAAP); financial statements preparation and hands on experience with underlying accounting processes (order to cash, purchase to pay, etc). 
  • Experience with reviewing/making payments, GL accounting and monthly close process, including clearing of balance sheet items.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Fluency in English is required. Fluency in Dutch or French is an added advantage.
  • Working experience with IT financial systems; SAP Business by Design is preferred. 
  • Willingness to learn and to further develop accounting and advisory skills.
  • Proven cultural awareness while working in an international setting.

Contract information: 

  • Contract type: One-year National fulltime (40 hours a week) contract, with possibility of extension based on performance. 
  • Duty Station: The Hague, the Netherlands.  
  • Expected Start Date: as soon as possible  
  • Note: For this role you need to be eligible to work in the Netherlands. SNV cannot sponsor for a work visa.
