Background
The Laikipia, Isiolo, Samburu Transforming the Environment through Nexus (LISTEN) is a 3.6 million Euro project funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and implemented by a consortium of partners comprising Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC), Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and SNV Netherlands Development Organisation with SNV as the lead agency. The 3.5-year project seeks to contribute to enhance resilience by increasing food, nutrition and water security in the three selected Arid and Semi‐Arid Lands (ASAL) counties of Laikipia, Isiolo and Samburu in Kenya. Each consortium partner brings their own specialization to the table and will combine their capacity to achieve four key outcomes:
1. Outcome 1: Improved institutional capacities and programming frameworks for inclusive climate resilience at the county level.
2. Outcome 2: Improved water and livelihood resource management at Landscape level in the Ewaso Nyiro River Basin Ecosystem.
3. Outcome 3: Increased production and income through adoption of Good Agricultural Practice (GAP), good management and efficient water practices, technologies and innovations in selected crop and livestock value chains, including fodder and forage.
4. Outcome 4: Use of Knowledge and Innovation management increased in ASALs.
Job Description
Based in SNV’s Nanyuki field office in Laikipia county, the Junior Consultant will support implementation of the LISTEN project activities and work with the Project Manager on water and livelihood resource management component and business cases development. She may be assigned other duties beyond the said project component as may be found necessary from time to time.
Scope of Work:
The Junior Consultant will work with the supervisor assigned to them on the following areas:
- Support project implementation activities working in partnership with the relevant county departments and focal stakeholders and partners in the project focus counties.
- Support relevant data collection, analysis and report development e.g. livestock value chain analysis and reporting.
- Support implementation of training of livestock community groups at the ward level and business cases that have a livestock management component.
- Support documentation the facilitation of workshops and exchange visits of the LISTEN project
- Support the review and establishment of livestock multistakeholder platforms (involving pastoralists & agro-pastoralists, conservancies, private sector, and government) to enhance coordination.
- Ensure close monitoring and follow up with the established livestock groups in the selected counties ensuring group progress, timely reporting and continued good rapport with county staff at the ward level.
- Support mapping of rangeland and grazing plans in the project’s target locations.
- Capturing and reporting on lessons learnt that contribute to knowledge development.
- Any other activity that may be assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
- Degree in Livestock production, Rangeland Management or any other related field.
- At least 3 years of relevant experience in livestock production, rangeland management or any other related fields.
- Experience working in Arid and semi-Arid areas in assignments related to livestock production and integrated Landscape Management.
- Good understanding of and experience with the participatory approaches in landscape & grazing management and drought resilient strategies in the context of pastoralist societies, herd mobility, resilience building, and sustainable utilization of natural resource.
- Demonstrated knowledge on value chain development strategies that reaches the women, youth and the poor
- Excellent research, report writing and presentation skills
- Experience working with local partners, government agencies and Community Based Organizations
- Previous work experience in the Ewaso Ngíro basin especially in Isiolo, Samburu and Laikipia counties is an added advantage.
