Background

The Climate Resilient Agribusiness for Tomorrow (CRAFT) Project is a 5-year, project being implemented in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The project is implemented by SNV (lead partner), in consortium with Wageningen University & Environmental Research (WUR & WEnR), the CGIAR research programme on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), Agriterra and Rabo Partnerships. It is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DGIS).

The programme is implemented around three main pillars or work streams;

  • Adoption of CSA practices & technologies in arable crop production farming systems
  • Acceleration of investments and business growth in selected value chains
  • Improved enabling environment for scaling out of CSA.

Climate change has resulted in very poor yields and low return to farmers, and other actors (e.g. buyers, processors) in the target value chains (sorghum, potato, green grams and common beans). CRAFT’s inclusive business approach supports international and national efforts to address the effects of climate change and to promote sustainable production in arable crop value chains. The project works with and through the private sector (SMEs) and supports public sector partners to create an institutional environment for large-scale adoption of climate smart practices and technologies. CRAFT’s strategic approach is to invest in the interests of private sector partners including guaranteed buyers of food crops, service providers, and cooperatives to integrate climate smart practices into respective supply chains. It is anticipated CRAFT’s economic incentives will form the basis for large-scale adoption of climate smart agricultural (CSA) practices and technologies.

A wide range of climate smart practices and technologies already exists and have been developed in past years by agricultural research institutes and private sector partners. At the level of the farming system, they include technology, innovation and management practices on improved soil and water management, crop production/post-harvest handling, (agro-) forestry and energy management, among others. Also, for SMEs a range of options exist to climate-proof their value chains. Their application and implementation at scale in concrete producing areas and for concrete farming systems and value chains, however, remains limited. Through this assignment the project seek to identify the main barriers and financial worthiness for adoption of climate smart practices, technologies and approaches by smallholders and SME’s, with a gender lens assessment. This includes; Identifying CSA practices and technology practised describing their application including costs incurred and benefits realized, risk and diversification analysis, , return on labour analysis, and access to appropriate solutions considering specific gender and youth inclusion considerations.

CRAFT seeks to ensure that the Climate Smart practices and technologies are gender responsive and that the technologies are based on needs and interest of both female and male farmers. This will ensure equal grounds among men, women, and youth in relation to adaptation to climate change.
