Project background

Market-Based Energy Access for Refugees

The EnDev Market-Based Energy Access Project (MBEA II), implemented by SNV Kenya, facilitates market-based access to cookstoves and solar-powered solutions for households, businesses and social institutions in the camp. This is achieved through provision of technical assistance and facilitation for stoves and solar lighting systems distributors either already operating in the refugee setting or entering the market.

The project has three key thematic areas:

1.       Promote stoves and solar for use by households

2.       Promote stoves and solar for productive use in business settings

3.       Promote stoves and small-scale solar solutions for social institutions

The project is looking to achieve the following targets:

  • 4,500 solar products to be sold to households enhancing 22,500 people to gain access to electricity
  • 2,500 cookstoves to be sold household increasing access to cleaner cooking solutions for 12,500 people
  • 500 SMEs to access electricity
  • 100 SMEs to access cooking
  • 50 jobs to be created along the stove value chain
  • 50 jobs to be created along the solar value chain
  • 50 jobs to be created by SMEs in pursuit of access to energy

Job Description

The project is seeking to employ a Local Capacity Builder (LCB) to support the coordination and implementation of project activities in Kakuma refugee camp, Kalobeyei integrated settlement and in the host community.

Responsibilities

This position will be based in Kakuma – Turkana County. The LCB will report to the Project Advisor and will be responsible for identifying and supporting sustainable and profitable energy enterprises in in the clean cooking and solar-powered lighting sector. The specific functions of the role include training, business development, data management, supply chain management, demand generation through various awareness and behaviour change campaigns and administrative and office operations duties. Specific tasks include, amongst others:

  • Identification and recruitment of stoves and solar entrepreneurs in Kakuma
  • Monitoring of activities implemented by private sector partners and providing regular updates and reports on the activities
  • Support the introduction of new cookstoves , cooking fuels and solar products to the market
  • Support implementation of awareness raising activities like a Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) Campaign for clean cooking to enhance awareness and demand of clean energy products
  • Support verification of reported sales data from private sector partners
  • Training of energy entrepreneurs and last mile distributors

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • At least a Diploma in business-related course (economics, business/entrepreneurship).
  • 1 years’ experience in (micro) business development/management
  • Experience in facilitation and provision of trainings
  • Experience in implementation of energy related project(s) is an added advantage

Conditions

Consulting contract for 20 days/month with start date of 1st September, 2021
