Job Description

Overview of project

In line with the strategic priorities of EKN in Burundi, the PADANE project is a (multi-annual) 3-year project developed around food and nutrition security to step up development support by increasing resilience of vulnerable rural populations, as well as improving incomes through market linkages and private sector agribusiness development, while targeting key groups such as women, youth and returnees. It aims to contribute to increased stability and security from improved food & nutrition security through commercial farming opportunities, resilient farming systems and employment creation. 

The project takes a market-based approach to deliver impact, creating employment and economic opportunities through (i) the brokering and facilitation of inclusive value chains and inclusive finance, (ii) empowering women, youth and returnees with improved food and nutrition security, and (iii) promoting resilience in market-oriented farming systems, villages and value chains.

Overview of the Position

Under the overall guidance of the Capacity Building Expert and the Project Manager the Gender Expert is responsible for development, implementation and ensuring quality control of youth employment and women empowerment activities including selection and oversight on sub-contracts.

Key Responsibilities

  • As an initial step, lead the analysis, validation and selection of gender interventions.
  • Conducting gender assessments and ensuring that assessment findings are integrated into project design.
  • Ensuring that gender considerations are incorporated into the design and implementation of all project activities.
  • Identify and select suitable project interventions for gender strategy.
  • Develop strategic gender intervention plans.
  • Identify potential local organizations to become partners to support the implementation of gender
  • Strengthen capacity of local partners to supporting implementation of gender interventions.
  • Monitor progress of gender targets as well as targets planned for local partners to ensure that all milestones set in the annual work plan are met.
  • Account and report to Capacity Building Expert on gender activities.
  • Guide knowledge development and documentation of lessons gained on gender activities.
  • Work with the Global Technical Advisor for Gender Equality and Social Inclusion as needed and coordinate eventual field visits for the technical back stopper(s) for gender.

Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in gender and development, or related field.
  • At least 6 years’ experience providing gender and youth expertise in similar programmes.
  • Proven project implementation skills including project development and report writing.
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluation of gender mainstreaming result area.
  • Demonstrated experience in capacity development.
  • Sound experience in knowledge management.
  • Able to strategically inspire and energise multi- partner project teams.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing various stakeholders.
  • Strong strategic decision-making and communication skills including reporting and presentation skills.
  • Fluency in both written and spoken French is required. Professional proficiency in English is highly desirable

Terms of Appointment

This is a full-time position with the successful candidate being contracted for 1-year basis with the possibility of renewal.
