Job Description

Job purpose

 

The Mechanical Project Engineer will develop and support the development, design and deployment of electro-mechanical systems, which includes mechanical system concept development and validation, mechanical drawing creation and maintenance, BOM release and maintenance based on approved budgets and schedules, applicable project specifications, codes, regulations and equipment capability requirement.

 

Duties and responsibilities

 

  • Collaborate with Mechanical and Controls Engineering team members to come up with a robust mechanical system design aligned with the project scope of work and controls philosophy in order to develop and complete designs, select adequate electro-mechanical components and automation field devices.
  • Develop mechanical system layout drawings, assemblies, part drawings, time charts, and schematics including pneumatic control circuitry. Conduct engineering studies, simulations and prototype building and test events as required.
  • Together with the Electrical and Controls project team members ensure the control system is designed in accordance to applicable codes based on project specifications and meeting appropriate Machine Safety Standards and procedures while providing feedback to improve methodologies and processes.
  • Evaluate components and quotations in order to meet technical design requirements. Collaborate with Procurement, Project Managers, vendors and suppliers in order to meet project technical and contractual criteria of time, cost and quality.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Customers, and Project Lead Hands by participating in project meeting handovers, design review, peer reviews, team meetings, equipment troubleshooting and design risk identification evaluation.
  • Oversee design work completed by assigned project designers and detailers to ensure the results are meeting the project criteria set forth by the Project Manager. Ensure tasks are delivered on time while good design practices are consistently applied.
  • Prepare and maintain design drawings as required for the customer approval, equipment build and equipment field deployment.
  • Complete mechanical bill of materials (MBOM) for release to procurement and manufacturing.
  • Collaborate and support production personnel and subcontractors during system build and deployment.
  • Follow up on designs through the build process to create as build drawings, prepare Technical Documentation for equipment manual as per project specifications. 
    • On request assist Sales and provide technical assistance to Applications Group.
    • On-site commissioning support of equipment if required.
    • Assist the Mechanical Group Leader and Project Operations Manager in continuous improvement effort aiming specifically at the system design and build processes.

Qualifications

 

  • Automation Systems design experience within a project oriented, fast paced work environment
  • Have an excellent working knowledge of electro-mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, mechanical actuation systems and control, servo motors, conveyors, safeties and robotics in general
  • Experience in SolidWorks and AutoCAD Design Software – Advanced Level
  • Machine design and drafting knowledge – Advanced Level
  • A good understanding of GD & T
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to details
  • Ability to travel to customer locations as required

 

Education / Experience / Professional Credentials:

 

College Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technologist or Technician program with 8-10 years of experience in a related field or a Mechanical Engineering Degree (preference will be given to those with automotive and / or appliance). P.Eng. designation is required.

 

Interpersonal:

 

Ability to take and give direction and develop good working relationships with project stakeholders

Ability to multitask and prioritize task while providing design work oversight in a team environment

Self-motivated and works well under stress

Detail oriented personality
