Job Description
Who You Are.
The Automation and Controls Engineer is responsible for design, implementation and support of our controls systems from initial customer requirements gathering to the released products’ sustaining engineering support.
The Automation and Controls Engineer serves three primary roles:
Serve as a member of the engineering oversight team to aid in the evaluation of technical solutions to meet business needs
Lead by example – drive product development and/or research based projects directly, and
Provide guidance and aid in mentorship to the electrical/controls engineering team.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for all aspects of industrial control subsystems for Flow products including the large installed base of legacy systems and new products in development
Collaborate with stakeholders and program management to define strategic direction and prioritize controls design enhancements and features
Review high level strategic requirements and collaborate with product managers, business development team members, and members of quality organization to define tasks, acceptance criteria, electrical designs, and controls enhancements
Leads by example; owns controls based product development projects and manage through NPD process
Coordinates system validation testing in conjunction with software development team leaders
Prepare controls design and architecture approach for custom engineered business proposal efforts
Work with Designers to generate electrical drawing packages (schematic + assembly) using EPLAN and/or Solidworks Electrical ECAD design software
Qualifications
Education/Experience and/or Training:
BS EE, CS, Physics or Mathematics with minimum of 3 years relevant stand-alone machine motion controls design work experience; MS level degree or 7 years relevant motion control design experience preferred.
Minimum 3 years’ experience in any of the following – industrial controls design and implementation, CNC motion controls design, robotics motion controls design, automation controls design
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated track record of developing products that meet market requirements and are manufacturable and field supportable.
Critical thinking problem solver capable of leading by example
Ability to lead projects
Strong understanding of how engineering efforts impact the overall business; grasps assignment of engineering projects based on business needs
Practical design and implementation experience in any combination of the following with an emphasis on motion control:
Motion control design and configuration
Industrial control system design
PLC Programming
Beckhoff Twincat
DeltaTau PMAC or PPMAC
IEC 61131-3
c, c++ programming experience
Modern digital control and real-time network protocols (EtherCAT, Profinet, Ethernet UP, Ethernet Powerlink, Sercos III etc.)
Experience with standard software design processes and version control tools (GIT, TFS, SVN, etc.)
High level of analytical ability and application of problem solving tool set to complex engineering requirements
Ability to work live on machines for development, testing and validation of control system software
Strong oral and written communication skills
Knowledge of National Electric Code (including NFPA 79) and European CE directives and standards for industrial machinery
Travel:
Approximately 15% travel will be required for customer visits, trade shows and worldwide factory meetings.
