Job Description

About the job
As a Sample Preparer, you will play a hands-on role in turning mineral samples received from mine sites into material ready for laboratory analysis. From registering samples through to crushing, milling and correctly storing the prepared material, you’ll work safely and accurately to keep the laboratory process moving.

Your core duties will include:

  • Receive, register and organise core and bulk samples from mine sites, ensuring samples are correctly identified and matched to paperwork
  • Prepare samples for laboratory analysis using crushing and milling equipment in accordance with established procedures and quality requirements
  • Transfer prepared samples into the correct bags, packets or containers while preventing contamination and maintaining sample integrity
  • Load and unload samples from drying racks while maintaining the correct numerical sequence
  • Complete sample preparation activities, including weighing, screening, crushing and other preparation tasks as required.
  • Work to established KPIs, balancing productivity with accuracy, quality and safe working practices
  • Maintain a clean and organised work area and follow SGS safety requirements, laboratory procedures and PPE requirements

About the workplace
Our Perth Airport laboratory operates 24 hours a day, Monday to Friday. You’ll work 8-hour morning, afternoon and night shifts on a three-week rotating roster, so you’ll need to be comfortable rotating across all three shift patterns.

This is a hands-on, physically active position. You’ll spend much of your shift on your feet, regularly handling and lifting samples of approximately 3 kg and operating crushing and milling equipment. The work can be repetitive and takes place in a dusty environment, with appropriate PPE, including protective headwear where required.

Qualifications

About You
You might already have laboratory experience, or you may be looking for an opportunity to take your first step into laboratory analysis. You’ll be well suited to this role if you enjoy practical work, can follow established processes and take pride in doing things accurately and safely.

You’ll bring:

  • The flexibility to work morning, afternoon and night shifts as part of the three-week rotating roster
  • The ability to comfortably undertake physical and repetitive work, including standing for extended periods and regularly handling samples
  • Strong attention to detail, particularly when working with sample identification, numbering and sequencing
  • The ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work effectively with general to limited supervision
  • A reliable approach to meeting KPIs while maintaining safety, quality and accuracy
  • A strong commitment to workplace safety and the correct use of PPE
  • Previous laboratory experience is desirable but not essential
  • A Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques and driver's licence are desirable
  • Full Australian working rights or a suitable Working Holiday visa, with candidates able to commit for at least six months welcome to apply
