Job Description
Role Purpose
The Geo Chemist will serve as a Subject Matter Expert to support SGS Malaysia’s entry into the oil and gas geoscience market by designing and developing geochemistry service offerings, supporting project delivery and validating technical proposals or commercial assumptions. The role is responsible for geochemistry testing, laboratory and field analytical support, data interpretation, technical reporting and client advisory work for upstream oil and gas customers.

- The position is expected to strengthen SGS Malaysia’s in-house technical capability to serve oil operators and related customers.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Design, develop and support new geochemistry testing and interpretation service offerings for the oil and gas / geoscience market.
• Act as technical specialist for geochemistry-related analytical services, including sample planning, sample handling, testing requirements, data interpretation, reporting and client advisory support.
• Support project delivery by coordinating laboratory and field technical activities, reviewing data quality and ensuring deliverables meet agreed technical and client requirements.
• Validate technical proposals, methodologies, scopes of work, assumptions and commercial inputs to ensure technical feasibility and proper project execution.
• Provide technical input and customer support from proposal stage through project execution, reporting, close-out and follow-up.
• Prepare and review technical reports, presentations, interpretation summaries, recommendations and client-facing documentation.
• Support business growth by developing internal capability, technical knowledge, SOPs, training material and service delivery standards for geochemistry-related work.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
• Plan, coordinate and review geochemistry testing requirements, including sample selection, preparation, preservation, laboratory workflow and analytical methodology alignment.
• Conduct or support interpretation of geochemical data for source rock evaluation, petroleum system understanding, reservoir / rock laboratory context and other oilfield applications where relevant.
• Evaluate laboratory and field data for accuracy, reliability, consistency and technical integrity before issuance to customers.
• Prepare, review and issue technical reports, data interpretation summaries, method statements, SOPs, training materials and client presentations.
• Provide technical advisory support to customers and internal teams on geochemistry scope definition, analytical options, troubleshooting, data interpretation and deliverable expectations.
• Support field operations and laboratory activities, including sample handling, investigation, testing coordination, equipment readiness and technical troubleshooting where required.
• Collaborate with sales and business development teams in preparing technical proposals, tender clarification, demonstrations and customer engagement activities.
• Assist in identifying equipment, consumables, laboratory methods, external partners and competency requirements required to build SGS Malaysia’s geochemistry service capability.
• Develop and maintain technical procedures and ensure work is aligned with SGS quality standards, applicable management systems, customer requirements and relevant industry practices.
• Keep updated on oilfield geochemistry, enhanced oil recovery, digital solutions, predictive modelling and geoscience market trends relevant to SGS service development.
• Maintain confidentiality, impartiality, professional integrity and good documentation control in all project, laboratory and customer-facing activities.
• Adherence to SGS Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Policy by upholding good safety behaviour and exercising necessary standards and processes when carrying out responsibilities at all times to ensure compliance with the HSE requirements.
• Perform any other responsibilities as assigned by your reporting manager and/or Senior Management.
Qualifications
Qualification
• PhD, Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Geochemistry, Chemistry, Petroleum Geoscience, Earth Science or a related scientific discipline.
• Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in geochemistry, oil and gas laboratory services, analytical testing, geoscience technical services or related upstream oil and gas work.
• Laboratory experience within the oil and gas industry is required; experience in reservoir / rocks laboratory, wellsite analysis or field analytical services will be an advantage.
Relevant Experience
• Experience working with oil operators such as PETRONAS, Shell or comparable upstream oil and gas customers is preferred.
• Experience in geochemistry testing, sample analysis, data interpretation, quality review and technical report preparation.
• Exposure to service development, technical proposal support, project delivery, client engagement and technical presentations is desirable.
• Able and willing to travel up to 25% of the time between customer sites, laboratories, field locations and SGS offices, including Shah Alam and Labuan when required.
