Job Description

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform the role of a Supervisor within the mineralogy division, sample preparation. The responsibilities and authorities of the technician in the mineralogy division in relation to post requirements are outlined.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for planning and execution of work as discussed with the Mineralogy Manager and HOD
  • Perform routine and non-routine tests following established procedures and/or modify procedures to accomplish the assigned tasks.
  • Routinely provide training to existing technicians/operators, new technicians/operators and temporary workers.
  • Complete tasks within the allocated time and plan work for technicians and operators to ensure that the overall service goals of the company are met.
  • Responsible for reporting any infringements or non–compliances by any other laboratory staff member with respect to allocated work, punctuality, or any other misdemeanour to the mineralogists and/or manager.
  • Assist with troubleshooting.
  • Must be able to prepare mineralogical samples,
    • Accurate recording and monitoring of sample flow and chain of custody.
    • Accurate weighing and recording of sample/aliquot masses.
    • Wet and dry screening.
    • Filtration: Vacuum and Pressure.
    • Crushing, splitting and pulverisation.
    • Preparation of polished thin and/or polished sections.
    • HLS and Carpco quality checks
    • Overtime as required
  • The sample preparation must be done most accurately and productively, and these samples must be delivered to the mineralogists in a timely and correctly manner.
    • Must be able to do magnetic separation tests using either the Carpco Magnetic separator.
  • Must be able to perform heavy liquid separation tests.
  • Ensure that all sample preparation is done correctly so as to avoid contamination, sample loss and sample swapping.
  • Calculate and evaluate interim test results as per standard format and/or procedures.
  • Report results and deliver prepared samples within the timeframe specified by the HOD and the mineralogists
  • Completion and filing of Control charts for the standards of the instruments used.
  • Ensure the working area under their responsibility is clean and safe, according to the housekeeping requirements of the SGS health and safety management system.
  • To work in other areas of the Met/Min division if required to do so.
  • Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  • Perform any other reasonable task as assigned by the direct line manager.

COMPLIANCE & AUTHORITY

  • Cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute a safety hazard or enter hazardous environments without the necessary knowledge and protection, and report the situation to the higher authority to take action.
  • Cease to carry on with work that may affect the quality (integrity) of services and report the situation to the higher authority to take action.
  • Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified or when nonconformity is identified.

Qualifications

  • Senior certificate or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 10 years as a mineralogical sample preparation technician and at least 5 years of experience in operational planning
  • Supervisory experience will be a advanatage

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Able to follow written English instructions to the finest detail
  • Good English communication skills
  • Basic computer literacy (word and excel)
