Job Description
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise routine analytical technique related to the established Fire Assay. Assist with the coordination of progress of jobs and results between sections and other departments relating to fore assay work and results.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise the FAS Floor ( weighing , fluxing , fusion , cupelling and dissolution of prills using either digestion or parting process) exactly to the relevant Competence Modules set ( Weighing in Geochem Fire Assay , Fluxing in Geochem Fire Assay , Fusion , Cupellation , Digestion of Ag and Pd prills)
- Punctuality at all times (15min earlier to start time or 15 min later from knock off time depending on handover).
- Ensuring proper handover during shift change ensuring team leaders are following the proper hand over process (day night & weekend shifts)
- Assist in the effective and optimum utilization of staff, equipment and facilities within the department.
- Liaise with the Team leaders/Operators to ensure customer requirements are achieved with regard to the turnaround time commitments.
- Report daily production figures to Section Manager, and reasonable explanations and evidence for targets not achieved.
- Production figures must be accurate and traceable to job numbers.
- Institute the necessary company corrective measures against subordinates for actions that are contrary to company rules & procedures by reporting to Section Manager.
- Assist in the investigation of any irregularities/non conformances within the fire assay process including the Improvement Requests and Client’s
- Drive good housekeeping practices and ensure that the work areas are surrounding environment is kept clean.
- Comply and Conform to the QHSE policy of the company
- Must have full understanding of the LIMS system.
- Must comply and conform to the Quality Management System ( ISO17025 and SANAS requirements)
- Attend to client queries promptly with appropriate feedback to the Manager with regards to resolutions.
- Institute appropriate root cause analysis for all problem investigations and formulate appropriate technical conclusions.
- Training of new Laboratory employees on the application of fire Assay techniques, processes, procedures and working instructions.
- Profiling and batching of jobs scheduled for day to day shifts
- Must be willing to work overtime/flexible hours when necessary.
- Overtime submission sheets must be properly checked) Section Manager( Name , employee number , correct hours claimed ) before handing in to Section Manager for approval.
- Co-ordinate and Supervise the production team
- Assist in the completion of production report.
- Evaluate and report analytical results.
- Standing in for other Senior staff durin his/her absence(meeting , trainings , sick leaves and annual leave)
- Participate and form part of Operational Integrity project and campaigns
- Apply Check status process and use the Stop Work Authority whenever the control of risks is not clearly established and understood
- Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
- Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned y direct line manager.
COMPLIANCE & AUTHORITY
- Assist with production coordination with specific collaboration with FAS and Instrumentation departments.
- Assist with the training and verification of Fire Assay staff
- Plan leave in such a way that overtime is kept to a minimum
- Check daily staff attendance and address any problem timeously and pro-actively.
- Ensure that there are sufficient Staff members on shift
- Ensure that required consumables and inventory stock levels/PPE for Fire Assay are monitored and maintained
- Carryout monthly stock counts within the department.
- Ensure the maintenance of the laboratory instruments and apparatus is performed and maintain equipment records, logbooks, files and registers accordingly.
- Cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute a safety hazard or enter hazardous environments without the necessary knowledge and protection and report the situation to higher authority to take action.
- Cease to carry on with work that may affect the quality (integrity) of services and report the situation to higher authority to take action.
- Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified or when nonconformity is identified.
Qualifications
Education
- National Diploma/Degree in Analytical Chemistry and /or proven years of laboratory, knowledge, skills and experience sufficient to recognized as qualification through – Recognition of Prior Learning.
- Grade 12, with Mathematics and Science
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a relevant discipline/analytical laboratory.
- Supervisory experience
- Knowledge of Laboratory Quality Management System.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Competent in technical knowledge of fire assay analytical process
- Must have full understanding of the LIMS system
- Supervisory experience
- Able to work with technical and management staff
- Able to work independently and to coordinate several activities simultaneously
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Assist with trouble shooting and problem solving
- Can fluently communicate in English
