Job Description

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

To assist the Supervisor/ Laboratory Manager with all supervisory tasks related to the materials testing, whether it’s on site or in the commercial laboratory. The Technician might be required to carry out the materials testing and strictly following the prescribed testing methods.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • A Technician is responsible to supervise and/or carry out and take responsibility of testing for all tests that the employee is deemed competent for strictly in accordance to prescribed methods. 
  • A Technician is responsible for instructing subordinates
  • A Technician is responsible to adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  • A Technician is report deviations, irregularities and non-conformances to Manager.
  • A Technician will be responsible for keeping of deadlines
  • A Technician will be required to verify equipment and update the control list.
  • A Technician will be responsible for quality assurance.
  • A Technician is responsible to perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by the authorized site supervisor/laboratory manager and regional manager.

SPECIFIC AUTHORITIES

  • Cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute a safety hazard or entry to hazardous environments without the necessary knowledge and protection and take action to address the hazard.
  • Cease to carry on with work that may affect the quality (integrity) of services and take action to address the issue.
  • Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified or when nonconformity is identified.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 / NQF4 or an additional three years relevant experience for each year of schooling below grade 12.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Fieldwork (densities, layer/stockpile sampling, manufacture and handle concrete cubes, DCP, Ring and Ball test (road surfaces), Sand Patch, On Site Viscosity tests, Sampling of Asphalt and Bitumen.
  • Competent and qualified to do all tests in all laboratory divisions including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete / aggregate
  • Do all calculations in full related to the tests mentioned above
  • Control laboratory activities such as quality control under supervision.
