Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead testing and certification projects for battery energy storage systems to ensure compliance with relevant industry standards.
  • Interpret and apply regulatory requirements such as UL, IEC, IEEE, NFPA, and other standards related to battery energy storage systems.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive test plans, ensuring rigorous safety evaluations in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Conduct failure analysis, risk assessments, and provide technical expertise in troubleshooting battery-related issues.
  • Collaborate with clients, design teams, and internal departments to support product development and certification milestones.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of evolving energy storage regulations and proactively adapt processes to align with changes.
  • Author detailed technical reports summarizing test results, compliance gaps, and corrective actions.
  • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and contribute to knowledge-sharing initiatives within the Battery Safety Team.

  • UL Standards: UL 9540, UL 9540A, UL 1973, UL 1642, UL 62133
  • IEC Standards: IEC 62619, IEC 62133, IEC 60730
  • IEEE Standards: IEEE 1547, IEEE 2030.2
  • NFPA Codes: NFPA 855, NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code)
  • Other Compliance Areas: UN 38.3 (Transportation), CSA C22.2 (Canadian Electrical Code), and relevant ISO standards.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in battery safety testing, certification, or regulatory compliance.
  • Proven expertise in energy storage systems, lithium-ion batteries, and related chemistries.
  • Strong understanding of thermal runaway behavior, fire propagation, and battery management systems (BMS).
  • Experience collaborating with certification bodies such as UL, CSA, ETL, or TÜV.
  • Excellent technical writing skills and the ability to present complex findings clearly.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Professional certifications in battery safety or energy storage systems (e.g., Certified Energy Storage Professional) are a plus.
