Job Description

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The field operator is responsible for the execution of field related inspection activities in accordance to standard procedures, industry guidelines and / or clients instructions.  In providing an independent service to the customer, the field operator shall perform his / her duties accurately and with the highest quality at all times.

RESPONISIBILITIES

  • Sampling of products from various sources e.g. Road / Rail Tankers, Terminal tanks, ship tanks, Drums, etc.
  • Labeling of samples, Registering and issuance to the Laboratory.
  • Tank gauging to determine level of product and temperature in storage tank and issuance of dip sheet and cleanliness certificates/
  • Inspection to determine cleanliness of container, eg. Road / Rail / ISO-tanks, Storage tanks, etc.
  • Inspection to determine cleanliness of pipelines (line pigging) and issuance of line cleanliness certificates.
  • Monitoring of Road Tankers whilst loading vessel and obtaining weight certificates for each delivery.  Inspection of empty road tanker thereafter.
  • Sealing of valves and hatches, eg. Pipeline / tank vales, road / rail tanker valves and hatches.
  • Recording of Inspection data / results in field notebook, accurately and neatly, so as to ensure easy traceability of data / results.
  • Completion of Inspection certificates and reports accurately and neatly.
  • Continuous updating of the Job File with the relevant Inspection reports or results.
  • To advise immediate supervisor or manager of changes / events that could have a detrimental effect on the Company or Business operations.
  • Crude tank farm operations, sealing / isolating pipeline valve system, sealing tanks, gauging, sampling, water draining, water cut and issuance of dip sheets.  Maintaining a log of tank farm event, delays, anomalies and deviations and reporting of these timeously to the respective surveyor / terminal personnel.
  • Witness packing of containers (drums, etc.) as per clients or internal procedures or other specific requirements.
  • Manning the road tanker loading of bitumen onto bitumen bulk vessels, as per internal working procedures.
  • Recording and collating weighbridge certificates, inspecting of road tankers.
  • Ensure sample and inspection equipment are clean and in working condition before and after use.
  • Maintaining the sample store room by placing samples for storage, systematically and removing samples, for safe disposal.
  • Recording of samples being placed in and being taken out of the storeroom in the sample register provided.
  • Ensure the Company vehicles are handled properly and kept in clean, presentable condition.
  • To perform all inspections (SHE vehicles, etc.) that is assigned to themselves.
  • To perform general housekeeping on our facility as well as regular housekeeping on motor vehicles.
  • To complete all CBT training that they have been registered with, in required time period.
  • Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  • Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by direct line manager.

 

SPECIFIC AUTHORITIES

  • Cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute a safety hazard or entry to hazardous environments without the necessary knowledge and protection, and report the situation to higher authority to take action.
  • Cease to carry on with work that may affect the quality (integrity) of services and report the situation to higher authority to take action.
  • Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified or when nonconformity is identified.

Qualifications

​​​Education

  • Minimum academic qualification is Grade 12 with Maths & Science.
  • A higher education in Chemical Engineering or Instrumentation would be advantageous.
  • Valid drivers license.

Experience

  • Minimum of 12 months plant operations (all types of plant operations-manual, automated or plant panel operations, or
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in field inspection activity (sampling, gauging of tanks, temperature measurements, etc.).
  • If the incumbent is new in the industry, background and qualifications shall be a criteria.
